Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • I think this is a small issue.

I'm on 6 days and 15hrs with 48% remaining. 1 hour of GPS and phone connected only to sync and mess about with watch faces for maybe 12 hrs.

I'm not so sure it is a small issues. Confusing yes because of the wide variety of results, but not small

I was down to 51% after 24 hrs yesterday with about 2 hrs of GPS (using OHR) and connected to phone. Only changed the watch face (to a different supplied one) from out of the box. That would seem a far cry from a suggested 7 days of smart watch or 11 hrs of GPS (or a combination). I mentioned earlier that the battery indicator seemed a bit odd. Mine increased by 1% shortly after finishing a GPS activity, another 1% over the following hour, then held at 54% for the next 4 hrs.

    Something does not appear right.
  • this is not small issue at all, sometimes i need to charge it and go in mountain for week.. i cannot imagine what could happen if it charges incorrect, and mine calculation for uptime goes wrong... im depending heavy on this device when im outdoor.
  • You probably need to get professional gear then. Not prosumer stuff.

??????If peeps are not getting what I just quoted, and near to want they advertise, then a firmware fix ain't gonna help. You have a duff battery or something related. Just exchange?
  • Long steady run this morning, 3:15 and down to 41% at the end. Nothing flash. Just what I have always used with all previous Garmin devices. Looks like I could expect around 8hrs of GPS from fully charged. So it seems a bit shy of 11 hrs.

However, the manual suggests up to 11 hours with GPS and OHR. So perhaps 8(ish) with GPS+Galileo and chest strap is not unreasonable.
  • Went on a 1.5hr walk today with GPS enabled. Went down 5%, and even with a soft reset I'm seeing some bad battery drain. This morning at 7am it was 37% now, at 20:30 it is 22%.

I think the battery indicator drops faster near the end clearly!

Depending on drain over the next few hours I'll have to put it on charge tonight to get through tomorrow.

I'm on 8 days and 2 hrs so far with almost (very close) 3 hrs GPS usage and a few hours (12+) of phone connection messing with watch faces.

Not sure if that is good or not?

They quote 19hr with GPS. So that is roughly 1 hr per 5.263% ...vs (12d/288hr) 1hr per 0.347% watch mode.

So for my usage I expect to be at the following %

    3h gps * 5.26% = 15.78%

    191h (minus GPS time) watch *0.347% = 66.277%

    So roughly (very roughly) 82.057%

The fact that I'm at 22% when the maths (and Garmin estimated) says I should be at 18% I think it pretty good. Although I don't have smart watch on all the time (only for about 12 hours)

    Thoughts?

i want to get only what tels on the box, nothing more nothing less... when you buy pair of jeans, and if zip is broken in some way you get return. also i thing tha pro gear is for pros, not for me.

The suggestion is up to 7 days from a full charge. That would be under ideal conditions. I would suggest that depending on a device that might last 7 days for a 7 day trip is probably not a good idea. Different matter if there was a guaranteed uptime of 7 days. But really, what can you do with it if you only use it as a watch? As soon as you start using it to record data, you are going to begin impacting the battery life. And since you would be lucky to get 11 hrs using GPS and OHR, what is the point of "depending heavy" on it for an extended trip?

And whether the battery life says 7 days, or 30 days, mountain conditions change things. Temperature is a real issue. Either way, if you are not taking a battery pack and basic replacements such as map, compass etc, you are putting a lot of faith in a single point of complex failure.
  • Completely agree crutlefish. This device is not to be used for situations where the risk of danger could soon become real.

Meanwhile I'm on 20% since 6am this morning. 21% when I went to bed.

It was draining quicky last night, so not sure if it is now stuck at 20%.

This is my first charge. So far I'm getting what I expected. Although battery drain reporting is definitely not linear.
  • hello! I'm an Italian user and recently I bought an Fenix5 plus.
After 2° charge I use the Fenix from Monday (6:00am) to Sunday (11:30pm) (approx. 0%). I wear 24/7 the watch with active monitoring and BT notification (with iphone). During the week I run 2 times (total 2 h)

I'dont know if it's normal but obviously not the same of Garmin's tech spec
