Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • No problem for me, had it on for 24 hours, showing 92%. See how it goes on a run tomorrow (5 plus)

Can anyone with 5S plus please comment on battery life with GPS plus HR? Now I have Fenix 5. I would love to upgrade to 5S Plus for its smaller size and maps but I need it to make it through and Ironman race (meaning 11-12 hrs). I read a review of Fenix 5 Plus claiming the battery life in activity is actually close to Fenix 5. Could it be the case of the 5s plus too (being close to regular Fenix 5S)? Thank you!
  • Hello

    i got a 30% battery consumption for a 2h30 activity with GPS+ music. (fenix 5+)
30% for 2h30 is just on par with Garmin's claim of 8 hours.
I need to try without music & GPS only (Galileo disabled)

I have the fenix 5s plus, I don’t think the battery is that good on mine anyways , it was on 100 percent Friday morning , I did a just over hour bike ride that day , Saturday I did a 2 hour bike ride and 2 Hour walk , all with normal GPS and a Bluetooth external HRM, by sat eve I was down to 22 percent , although between those activities it’s been doing 24/7 heart rate , steps, sleep and stress tracking
I had a FR 935 before and the battery lasted over a week doing all my usual activities, don’t think this 5s plus will , although it has more features
this morning I did 45 min weight training with music and it used 11 percent battery
    hope this helps

I am getting very disappointing battery life on my Fenix 5 Plus as well. I let the watch discharge all the way on Thurs night then charged it overnight so it was at 100% on Friday morning. Since then I have had 5.5 hours of GPS+Galileo activities along with a 50 minute strength training session and tonight (Sunday) the watch is at 14%. Could it be Galileo that is causing the increased battery drain?

My Fenix 5+ is not doing great even on second charge. Today, it lost 30% during almost 5 hour hike, which I thought was perfectly acceptable, since it was with Galileo, navigation and all. But it lost 15% since then in watch mode, which is not. What really annoys me is this ghost drain after activities, you finish activity but it doesn't seem to stop draining right away.

That said, it's definitely not that bad as others here, but I think we can now safely conclude that some 5+ models have battery issues. My Fenix 5 would easily get me through the week with my acivities. 5+ has probably half its battery life.
  • Hello,
If you know or can guess, how long did you charge it after it showed 100% on the display? Battery may not have been 100% at the time checked it, and it may not be true 38% now.
Before sending it back, try what I wrote in an earlier post in this thread and check if that improves battery measurement.

Let us know how it went.

Definitely some minor bugs, but I didn't expect better battery life.
Garmin took a 5x (480mA battery) and stuck it into a 5 (about 300mA) and added music, Garmin pay, etc. And your only getting about 80% of the capacity of the battery pack due to heat loss/resistance anyway.

So the already diminished 5x "12 days of smartwatch/20 hours GPS" battery life just got less in the smaller 5+. Seems mathematically reasonable. I'd say I could get 8-10 days of smartwatch without music and playing with settings.

So this morning after sleeping with the watch all night my battery was down to 11%, and then after a 35 minute run it was down to 3%. However, when I plugged the watch into my computer to charge it a little before my lunch time walk the battery immediately read 10%. I wonder if the watch is having trouble reading how much battery is actually left. Unfortunately, when the watch reaches 0%, whether there is a charge left or not, the watch just turns off.

Ok things just got even stranger. So when my watch was at 3% this morning I tried to reboot it but since the battery level was so low it would not start. As stated earlier when I plugged the watch into the computer the battery level immediately jumped to 10% causing me to doubt whether it was really at 3%. I then let the watch charge for about 10 minutes and the level read 19%, however when I unplugged the watch the battery level immediately jumped to 25%. I just got back from my 55 minute (GPS + Galileo) walk and the battery level still read 25%. Thinking that the charge was stuck I rebooted the watch only to have the battery now read 29%. What is going on here? Is the battery meter that messed up?

The battery meter is definitely weird. It will jump higher when you unplug the watch sometimes. This has been observed also here: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5-5s-plus/1366694-charge-time-and-charge-rate-of-fenix-5-plus?p=1366703#post1366703.

Mine has all kinds of other quirks. Fof example:
    • on last charge, which I was pretty carefully monitoring, it jumped from 85% immediately to 100%
    • After taking it off from the charger it would show 100%. Rebooting immediately, it went to 92%
    • Putting it back on charger with 92%, it would go back to 100% in a minute or two
    • It would then stay at 100% for 6 hours with no sing of discharge until reboot. Which would bring it to 95%.
    • And so on.
It also seems very nonlinear. My discharges really fast from 100% to about 75% (unless it gets stuck at 100), quite slow from there to about 50. Quite fast between 50 and 25 and really slow under 25. You can't create 100% accurate meter, so it's not so much of a worry, but it seems to be a bit on the extreme side.

Maybe this can be fixed by firmware. Or maybe couple more discharge cycles will fix it. But I have to wonder if the battery issues we're seeing here aren't more of a battery meter issues.
