Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • I finally managed to get my F5+ to last over a week....by doing only a couple of activities.

So I have a fitness watch that encourages me to do less :p

Maybe Garmin should reconsider their strapline "Beat Yesterday" for something more fitting like ''Put your feet up".

Or maybe they just rebrand the F5 as a pro model and the F5+ as a recreational model.

I've gone from the 3 to the 3HR to the 5. This move to the 5 plus is the first time I've been remotely disappointed I've experienced the same issues. Charging to 100% followed by a power cycle and a new, low 90% battery value. Only 3 indoor rowing activities of less than 20 minutes each and the battery level is at 13 % after 7 days.

It's a trust issue. My fenix 5 lost about 7% per day with MUCH higher activity usage. With the same settings but lower usage the 5 plus drains at over 12% per day.

My fenix 5 clearly had up to 2 weeks smartphone usage ... as advertised. My much more expensive 5 plus lasts barely a week.

Still no reply from support about this after 6 days. I'm giving it another week to see if there's any improvement

Garmin should not be advertising it as having up to 12 days smartphone usage if you have to turn off everything that makes it a VERY EXPENSIVE premium product in order to come close. Dishonest. I cannot recommend this to others at its current performance levels.
  • I’ve been doing a side-by-side comparison with my 935 and after 4 days with two GPS runs and two treadmills runs my 935 has 53% battery remaining and the 5+ only 17%. All the settings on the watches are identical. Each watch started at 100%.

From what I'm seeing, I seem to lose about 10% battery in the 3 to 4 hours after ending a GPS activity, and then the watch normalizes again. As it stands, I’m getting slightly over 4 days of battery life on the 5+, and that’s with only logging GPS activities on alternating days.

I've reported what I'm seeing to Garmin but I’ve yet to receive a response. With this and the elevation issues I'm seeing, I'm pretty close to throwing in the towel.

have you reported it to beta team?
  • have you reported it to beta team?

I'm training for a marathon so I've not installed any of the betas...yet. But I submitted a general troubleshooting request.
  • Earlier on people mentioned that they would RMA to attempt to fix the post activity battery drain. Did replacing your unit improve things or are you still waiting on a software fix?

I'm starting to have serious doubts as to Garmin's development team competency as they are not able to prioritize important issues over lesser ones such as music player improvements. Any logical person would first prioritize major performance issues such as the broken fuel gauge or battery drain over things like a music player redesign.

I've had this watch for over two months and battery meter still shows garbage on 4.20, charging to 86% actually gives you 100% charge.

Maybe this issue is hardware a design flaw. Since Garmin never acknowledged its existence, that's as likely explanation as any. This thread contains more data than they need if they actually wanted to own to it. But they are just doing the classic head in the sand trick.

So at this point, I would just assume that it's something that cannot be fixed. RMAing may help, I don't think we have enough data on that. But otherwise, if you're facing this issue, you have to decide if it's grounds for returning the watch, or if you're ok living with it. Believing that Garmin will fix it at this point is kind of like believing in fairy tales.. They probably tried, failed, and moved on to things they know how to fix.
  • Well... because misery loves company....

I decided to drain my battery until the watch turned off then charge up to 100% to see how it would fare. I was fully charged at 7pm last night. The battery was at 75% when I woke up. Not cool, Garmin. 25% overnight while it was sitting in a drawer! I might go back to my garmin 645. I'm not sure maps are worth this extra hassle.

Edit: 24 hours after being fully charged, the watch is at 59%. It has only been used for one 30 minute activity which did not use GPS. Other than that, it's been sitting in a drawer. I'm pretty sure I will be returning it. That's pretty pathetic.
  • After 3 full days with 3 swimming pool activities at least 1 hour and 30 minutes each lost 50%..before full charging i pressed the light button for 15 sec..i am on 4.20 version with hr on,bt on and a lot of notifications every day..before i i press the light button the battery was lasting max 4 daysciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1396260.jpg
  • I bought My Fenix 5 PLUS in July. And I can see battery drained fast after Activity. So I usually power off then power on the watch after doing Activity.

But there is still something weird(Unexpected drain?)happens.

Yesterday after I back home,I closed the BT and put away it as usual.(Battery is about 50 %)
Today in the morning I found the watch is turned off.....
    It drained to 0 %....
This is the second time I met,No HR/GPS/WIFI/BT/Activity were used.

FW version is 3.2(the latest official version from region-Taiwan)

You can see pic that the battery drain rate is normal in previous days.(Using condition is the same)
