Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • I have F5+ since 4th-Jul. I'm not heavy user, but I was charging it only 3 times since purchase. normally it is every 7 days.
I have auto backlight enabled, HR 24/7 monitor my activity & sleep and have 3-4 45 minutes GPS training in a week. Connecting with smartphone via BT only for data synch 3-5 times per day.
Well I'm pretty satisfied with this, because I had only Android Wear watches so far, which was max only 3 days battery life without any sport functions used.
Charging from 8% takes around 3 hours via USB in laptop. SW 3.10.
  • I know I'm repeating myself but I'm getting bored of coming on here looking for any type of acknowledgement from Garmin (and yes, I have contacted them directly).

Charged to 100% yesterday, left charging for another 2 hours, went on a 1 hour bike ride which used a reported 6-7% (I'm good with that). Now 24 hours since taking it off charge I'm down to 51%. And I know from earlier trial and error that the watch will shut down when it hits zero. No fancy faces, apps or anything, just the same setup I used to get 10-14 days on out of my Fenix 5 between charges.

I know not everyone seems to be affected by this, but looking at the numbers who are there's clearly some sort of issue here beyond just a hardware defect affecting one or two devices. Until someone having these problems exchanges their f5+ and finds no issue with their replacement then I'll remain convinced it's a firmware issue and will wait (impatiently) for Garmin to sort it.
  • Yes, this would be also issue for me as something causes this battery drain in your watch, which is not affecting other users.

I've just upgraded to the Fenix 5 Plus after tow failed Fenix 5 Units (various issues). I was assured that the Plus version was a massive improvement and I'd have no issues at all.
Full charge from new on Sunday evening, and just daily wear has gotten me down to 46% as i sit here typing.
    Not impressed.
I also have other issues with it which I won't fill the the thread with, but to say its a massive improvement is an overstatement in my opinion from what I have experienced in 3 days!
I will be persevering for a few months before I make any decisions - but the store have said if I'm not happy within 3 months then to return for a full refund!!
Hopefully it won't come to that, but it is what it is.
Come on Garmin, lets see some input please.

Been feeling under the weather lately so I was only using my watch as a smartwatch since charging it 2 days ago and during that time I only saw a 12% battery drain. This morning I went for a 45 minute run that drained a little over 4% of the battery, bringing it down to 82%. Since the run, about 5 hours ago, I have lost an additional 4% of the charge. I wonder what it is about doing a GPS activity that increased my battery drain even after the activity was done.
  • I'm having Wi-Fi syncing issues with my f5+ which I've posted about in another thread, but as Wi-Fi only activates immediately post-activity to upload, I was wondering whether extended Wi-Fi activity if it fails to connect or sync might account for the post-activity battery drain.

I'm going to disable Wi-Fi Auto-Upload (I think that's the only time Wi-Fi is ever activated) and see what difference that makes, but has anyone else already tried that?

I have still the same issue like you - however I realized now that if I turn off the Bluetooth sync on the Fenix 5+ and just activate it once per day I have a much better battery life than before.

I can now get around 6% battery drain per day for smartwatch usage. Also after GPS activity no big drain anymore. However this was not present on Fenix5 - there I kept Bluetooth sync always on (what I also prefer and would like to do with Fenix 5+)

I have still 83% battery left after 2 days (including 30 Minutes run with GPS + MUSIC) ... much better than before

I'm trying to run my watch down to 0% so I can give it a full charge cycle.
Just had a 15 minute tea break outside - turned on Maps to get a GPS Fix..... I went from 10% to 2% in 20 minutes!!! OUCH
And yes, forgive me for for sneaking an extra 5 minutes on my tea break - its so nice outside!

But seriously, 8% from standing around with just Maps activated is a joke!!!
  • Been following this thread and have the 010-01988-06 F5+ version. I received it last week, as it was on pre-order for quite a while and did not seem to release on time with the red marker version. Anyhow I have been tracking my battery this week and it seems to be somewhat normal to me. But wanted to share if anyone felt it should be performing better. I wear 24/7, have wrist HR on, WiFi turned off, BT to phone and all sensors disabled until they are needed. My activities are below and the sensors used.

  • Digging around in the menus on both the phone and the watch I have found two things turned on that I have now turned off to see if it makes a difference

On the watch I found Display Group Track on map turned on, I never use it on my watch so it is of no use to me. I do have the map as one of my screens on my GPS activities and rarely display it but I was wondering if maybe the watch uses this as a queue to communicate and update details during and maybe some time after an activity.

On the phone I had the option auto-update apps turned on, I don't actually think this works too well anyway as when I connect to Garmin Express it is still reporting that 4 apps are out of date and need updating. Again I wonder if the watch is trying to update after an activity (and perhaps failing) drinking more power.

I know I am digging in the dark but being a developer for over 30 years has taught me to never discount anything until you have tried it ;)
