I never really looked at the Fenix line of products until this week, and suddenly found myself doing so, more or less because of two features the Fenix Plus series have and the Forerunner 645 don't: Maps and navigation, and Galileo.
I'm trying to decide between getting the FR645 and the Fenix 5S. I only run, mostly on known routes, but when I'm abroad or somewhere I do not know, I usually take a phone with me (which I hate) so that I can figure out where to run. Sometimes I even prepare a course beforehand, and try to navigate it using google maps. During the run I pan and zoom quite often to check I'm still on course, and also use the map in case my original route is blocked in practice and I need a detour.
I'm wondering how good the use of maps on the Fenix Plus is. Can it really replace what I'm doing with my phone during those slow paced runs I do in unknown places? Is navigation with it possible? Is the turn-by-turn working well in case a course has been loaded? I believe this feature will not be available on the FR line (it seems they've now introduced a breadcrumbs navigation option there, without background maps...)
The other question is how big the difference between GPS+GLONASS (which I also have on my current FR630) and GPS+Galileo is. I would love to have more accuracy but the question is will the difference be negligible or apparent.
Are there any other features on the Fenix Plus series that are applicable to runners that I should consider? The difference in price is definitely apparent.
Would be happy to hear thoughts from anybody with experience in either lines (FR and Fenix), and of course from those with experience with both.
Cheers!
