Road Navigation UK

I have tried most settings, but cannot get my Fenix 5 Plus to navigate using Automobile Routing.

All that ever happens is it plots a straight line to the destination.

I have Routing set to Automobile, calculation method either Minimize Time or Distance.

Comments about the Fenix 5X say that automobile routing worked, firmware is 3.10.

Road Cycling Routing works as expected, am I misunderstanding Automobile Routing?

  • I have the same problem on a F5X+. Based in Switzerland, with the TopoActive Europe West Map, within the same activity, if I select "Road Cycling" I get proper turn-by-turn navigation, but If I select Car / automobile / Motorcyle as activity, I get a straight point to point routing

I tried changing several option (such as "tick to road") but no change in behavior.

Finally, I installed a new map from https://openmtbmap.org/ for my area, and bingo ! I can now trurn-by-turn Navigate in any activity mode. So my conclusion is that the TopoActive Europe map does not allow for turn-by-turn navigation when Car or Motorcycle activity is selected.
  • I just got off a call with Garmin support about this issue. The problem is the new TopoActive maps that are preloaded on the plus as they are not routable by car. If you want automobile routing you'll have to get the City Navigator maps.
  • No feedback from Garmin on my case yet, they responded only saying they were not aware of it and requested screenshots

I have asked them to state where the EU Topo Active maps say they are only walking/cycle routable

The box for the Fenix 5 Plus just says routable maps.

The Talky Toaster UK free map works ok in Automobile mode, but on principal Garmin should supply fully routable maps or clearly state that on their website.

I believe the US version works without issue.
