24k Topo from 5x to 5x+

Hello all,
I purchased a 24k topo for my region from Garmin for my 5x. If I decide to upgrade to the 5x+ can these maps transfer?
  • Did you purchase a download or did you buy it on a card? The download is locked to the device so isn't transferable
  • I purchased it as downloadable. The lack of transfer will probably prevent an upgrade. I know that Garmin helped out with this when my first 5x got OHR cracks, but i guess that was a "special" one time deal.

any chance just copying the various map files for this map off the device and onto the new one will work?
  • Is the included TOPO 100K? 24K? This is an issue I am facing as well.

  • Included topo for North America is 100K.
  • The 100k map is not as detailed as I'd like for when I'm backpacking in the mountains. The OSM versions I've looked at do not have as many routable trails in my area, particularly where I backpack generally in the summer.
  • I copied maps from my 5x to an Edge 520 plus and they worked without issue, so it's worth a try.
  • Jamesn, did you copy just the xxxxxx.img file or did you copy over the .gma and .unl files as well?

Yes but which map? Some are transferable but the 24K one isn't, so it's not even worth a try, it won't work.

Not all maps come with unlock files. Those that do have them for a reason :)

If that is truly the case, I can see sitting this round of upgrades out. The increased price of the 5x+ and the additional cost to purchase the 24k topo is not worth the upgrade. Maybe Garmin Support will be helpful, or I'll reevaluate when the 6 series releases. It seems a little consumer unfriendly and is far different than how just about any other cloud purchased item works today (music, movies, books, etc).
