Hi,

Dumb question maybe? apart from being lighter is any other benefit from this material? i guess maybe more scratch resistant (or less visible scratchs than balck bezel)??

Apart from battery life do you see any reason of not getting 5s over 5? i read somewhere lighter watche's OHRM have greater precision (less movement)...??

Best regards,

I was wondering about this too. From all I could find, the only significant advantage of titanium is weight (and in this case, since only bezel/back is titanium, it's not that huge of a difference, though probably noticeable - 5S steel is still lighter than 5 titanium). It's more resistant to corrosion too (SS can rust) but this probably matters only in longer timeframe.

As for scratches, titanium is significantly harder than steel, but it tends to scratch more easily - this does depend on coating and titanium grade, but generally, what most watches use is not the hardest version in existence. I think only time will tell how well Fenix 5 Plus titanium holds, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I would also assume that DLC titanium version will be harder to scratch. Plus weight of DLC titanium band vs steel band will make a more difference. But now we're talking about $1100 watch.

The only other thing is looks. I do like how Fenix 5 Titanium with orange band looks.

As for 5s vs 5 for me it's battery. Since I sometimes do a long hikes, the difference of 18 vs 11 hours of GPS time is pretty significant. Especially with Galileo and some toying around, 5s might not get me through the day, so I wouldn't buy it. 5 should be fine.

Thanks for your reply, i didn0t expect the tit. to be more "scratchable"....:/, the rust thing i guess is not a problem in my case ;)
  • One benefit of titanium is that it oxidizes, so that when the finish scratches, it essentially "heals" itself over time.
  • Titanium is not harder than steel it is softer but it's stronger and it makes green sparks when cut ! ;-)
There is reason some titanium watch got special treatment to prevent the scratches. My Tissot Solar Expert was really scratched easily but I was able to to brush to its satin finish back. There some kind of jewelers sponges made for that.
But untreated titanium will easily scratch and wear. In cutlery the titanium liners on liner locks knives wear faster than steel liners.
Titanium is lighter than steel, won't rust and this a great thing.... but as the 5 buttons on the Fenix are made of steel ...
Looking forward to reading some return of experience.
  • The main benefit is increased bragging rights

Sorry but that is not necessarily true, but as a general rule it depends on its application.
  • Definitely a topic covered and debated extensively with the regular 5. It seemed from general reports that the black bezels had scratch issues compared to the grey?

    ????
But the DLC Titanium Plus is a different grey, I believe. Because it's titanium underneath the DLC coating so it could scratch easier?

But as for the Titanium Plus, I just don't like the grey back, at all. I think it ruins the whole look and makes it hard to pair a band for work (the black on black always works, but I preferred my old grey Fenix 5 color with metal grey band for looks). Dont get me wrong, the 5 Plus is a FAR superior watch overall.

Wish they had the silver/black with Sapphire glass...

I'm definitely curious how much black holds up. My Fenix 5 gray had some dings in the bezel after a year.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1365974.jpg
  • I bought the F5+T today and it is super nice in person, it’s a great looking finish. I hope it will be still in a few months!

I think I really need to see Titanium F5 (non-DLC version) in person. It's kind of hard to judge from photos how the grey case really looks. I was thinking about pairing it with brown leather band for work eventually, but maybe other colors will look better.

  • I have mine 5Plus Titanium for less 24 hrs, and I already found a few scratches on the titanium bezel, It will scratch no matter how much care I treat it. I really like the lighter weight compare with my old a Fenix 5.
