Are TOPO maps region locked

HI folks,

The recent announcement of the 5 plus series has piqued my interest and it seems to have everything I feel I want from my next device but I wanted some clarification on the maps situation with these devices. Are they region locked? DC Rainmaker's review of the devices he stated:

The Fenix 5 Plus series takes the mapping aspects of the previous 5X unit and brings them to all 5 Plus watches. This means that when you buy a unit now you’ll get maps for your specific region. Thus if in Europe you get TopoActive Europe, and if in North America you get North America, and so on.

I couldn't find that information on the official Garmin site / documentation and would love some clarity on this piece.

I'm due to be located in the States for a 6 month contract and was going to pick the watch up there, but since I live in Europe if I'm stuck with the US maps when my contract is finished then the feature will be of little use to me.

Thanks!
  • The watch isn’t “locked” in the sense of not being able to use maps from somewhere else. The watch will come with the maps for the region where it’s sold, but you can load maps for a different region if you move or travel elsewhere.
  • Thanks for the reply R_Tellis!

Would you happen to know of a service or have experience of loading of maps for a different region that you could recommend?
I've done some research and it seems to me that I have three options available

    * Purchase from Garmin direct at an extortionate amount for each region I may visit, but get the extra Garmin goodies such as popular routes
    * Use a different service like Talkytoaster for cheaper maps but missing some garmin features
    * Use an open source map provider / service to find one that may offer some mapping feature for free

Just trying to work out the best option for me. I dont expect the US maps to be particularly useful for me beyond my initial contract period and if trying to load alternative maps is a hit and miss process I'll wait and pick up the device when I get back to Europe, probably at a discounted price given it's been on the market for a little while by that point.
  • I agree with SUSSAMB - just download the detailed maps at http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ - download the type routable bicycle map for the country/reqion you need. No need to invest in topo maps
  • Good to know the openstreetmaps work, I use these on my Edge 520 and are good.

One question - the Edge has limited memory and I have to load a map each time I ride in a new location or country.
I'm considering the 5plus and travel with work.
Does anyone know if I can load the openmaps for the US and keep Garmin maps for EU installed in parallel?

Or better off downloading one big openamps for all regions I visit (UK, mainland Western Europe and all over the USA). I'd love mapping without having to mess about reloading.
  • assuming you don't fill your watch up with music there should be enough space on the 5+ for one big map. but does http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ allow downloading a map comprising europe and the US? i think it's organsied by regions.

also, does anybody know the folder i have to put an openstreetmap file in?
  • I just had a play - http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

It's possible to select multiple tiles at random from all over the world as one file.
I do this for the UK - I have a 'UK' file with all my regular spots that are not adjacent - due to limited size on the Edge 520.

The maximum download size seems to be 4GB. The covers all of USA, or UK/France/Germany.

It would be great if I could load both simultaneously as multiple files. It appears this is possible, I can't seem to find detail on how to select but looks promising. I could use the installed EU maps, then add USA, Canada etc as separate Opensteetmap files - would just need these for local runs etc or finding the hotel.
  • Did you find that those openstreetmaps give the same functionality as the garmin extortionate ones?

Specifically, do they work with Trendline?

Id want to keep UK and add all of Thailand, allowing Trendline for both as it is the main reason I want to upgrade to this watch. Think the storage could handle it?
