Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Series are available in the UK via Cotswold Outdoor and Snow and Rock.
  • Go with Fenix F5X. Who knows when Descent will get updates... At least F5X series get updates montly or seasonally. :)

Yeah you've got a valid point. I've been hovering around the Descent forums for quite some time, and it's a ghost town there (particularly from a Garmin POV). I can't imagine how frustrated the owners of the Mk1 are over the silence.

I'm currently house buying, so no outlandish watch purchases for now sadly. But the 5X plus for me is definitely on my wanted list.
  • That's on my list too. However, I won't buy. :D I switched from Fenix 3 to Fenix 5X due to maps and don't see a major difference between the plus version except new toys. I'll wait for Fenix 6X instead. :)

Definitely not buying any of the series. Far too expensive and with no discounts there's no chance. £750 for a F5X plus? No chance. Was happy to pay £535 for my F5X after discount but no way I'm paying £215 more than that for the new version!

I have the fenix 5x and would certainly move to the Fenix 5 plus titinium after using it over the fenix 5x
  • Does anyone know if this has the same GPS Chipset, or a different one from the other Fenix 5 series?

If this means the unit of DCR then the answer is that "yes, this probably has a different GPS Chipset than the units of the laymen, because DCR tend to be more pleased with the GPS accuracy of Garmin products than the laymen" :-)

Sorry, mate, I know you meant it in a diffferent way, but I dunno the answer, just did not wanted to miss that shot towards DCR reviews.
  • Anyone have any discounts for the UK stores? I thought it normal you can usually get ~15% off.
  • I have a 15% discount code for Cotswold's, which I have previously used on my 5X, but when trying this on a plus, the code is accepted, but gives no discount. It does for other things so I know the code is valid. I have seen others report this too. I guess they don't want to discount the watches

DCR states clearly in his review that the GPS chipset is different to the old F5. Not sure how you would go about verifying this short of a teardown , someone here said it might be surfaced somewhere in the API.

Alledgedly, Garmin have stopped retailers applying discounts unfortunately. So, no buy from me!

Garmin would have been better off keeping the price near the F5 range as they would shift more units. I fear they're going to see the issues that phone manufacturers and retailers are seeing with people skipping to a two year replacement cycle.

That's what I'm doing...I have the money but will wait until the F6 comes out before replacing my F5X. Or until they drop the price / allow discounts.

Yep I have previously got a discount via Cotswold, but not this time and not even on the older Garmin units, i’ll see what Suunto do with the Sunnto 9 and see if retailers discount that model. It’s a shame but you are right reference phones, it’s 24 months or more now due to the price increases on new models.

Oh oh well I won’t be moving from a Fenix 3 then,

And I'm not upgrading either. I was very early (launch day) with Fenix 3, 3HR and 5x. But wont be with 5X Plus. And I think a lot are thinking the same as there is still PLENTY of stock around - where with all earlier launches watches was sold out for ages after the initial pull. Maybe Garmin have produced more as well as there was no pre-order - but normal 5 Plus is in stock everywhere bar 2-3 Cotswold shops - and 5X Plus is available from quite a few shops - but online with next day delivery.
