Turn by turn cycling with MK1

Hi All, I fancy myself not an idiot, but maybe I'm wrong. I got the Descent Mk1 as an all activity watch; I freedive, scuba, cycle, and run... so it seemed perfect.

I have the speed and cadence sensors for my bike, which pair great; love it. But...  I can not for the life of me figure out how to activate turn by turn directions with either komoot or the training routes in Garmin Connect.. what on earth am I missing?

  • I've never tried it with my Mk1 but as the Mk1 is based on the fenix 5X, it might be best asking (or searching) on the fenix 5 forum.

    The big problem I had with my Mk1 and cycling (I, too, have speed and cadence sensors), is that in order to to use the HR features of the watch, it has to be on your wrist.  The wrist is not the best place for it of you want to check your speed and cadence.  It sort of forces you to get a HRM strap.

    Generally, the turn-by-turn navigation works if you created the Course in Garmin Connect, or with another tool that includes the necessary navigation waypoints and instructions into the file. A favorite tool for many Garmin users is the website Plotaroute.com, where you can export the course in the Garmin-native FIT file format and place it directly on the watch.

    No, it does not have to. I am putting it sometimes on my ankle too. Works perfectly. And with some effort and creativity you could certainly use even some other body parts :-)  Using a HRM chest belt, linking it to the watch is another option.

    If the Mk1 is on your ankle, monitoring your cadence and speed while riding your bike  is going to be basically impossible, if not dangerous.

  • On your ankle? But if so, you don´t look on the device during the use, or? Otherwhise I am courious to see a pic with a device on the ankle while you are watching your speed and cadence or any other datas...Thinking

  • Perfect, I’ve tried Strava, Komoot, and Route planning on connect. I’ll try plot a route. 

    At this point I’m thinking it my settings, as I can get a map, the normal screens, and general direction to the end point, just not the turn by turn I’m hoping for.

    Where else do you want to have it, when not on the wrist, then?

    You can also mount the watch on the handlebar, and use a HRM chest belt connected to the watch, if you meant that. Or place it wherever else you wish.
