Navigation Mode vs Dive Mode

Ran into an interesting observation when using the Descent to navigate to a set of GPS coordinates on the surface, then descended once we were on top of the dive site. I left the Descent in Navigation mode and it never entered Dive Mode and started the dive, it stayed in Navigation mode until I ended Navigation about an hour after starting the dive. This was right before the release of V4.0 software, and due to a knee injury I cannot test this out again with the new software.

Has anyone else run across this? Or is willing to give it a quick test to see if this was corrected?

  • According to Garmin this is correct. If you start an activity Descent won’t go into dive mode. I use this when I jump into the water for a swim, to prevent Descent to go into dive mode and record false dives that clutter the dive log and are not possible to remove...
  • Garmin did not say anything to me about this being by design, they said they had been unable to recreate this. Regardless, this is an issue. Dive Mode should take precedence once a dive starts in most cases. In this case the GPS Navigation was useless once I went underwater and would not work, but the Descent stayed in Navigation and never entered Dive Mode. I noticed this almost immediately but decided to see what the Descent would do, the Descent is my second dive computer so I was using my primary for the dive anyway. If a diver did not notice this quickly, it will result in the dive time and NDL being off possibly significantly. This is a diver safety issue.

Now could there be a case where Dive Mode does not take precedence, quite possibly, but this is not that case.
  • Hi, see this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/decent-mk1/1393375-software-version-4-00-display-sw-2-10

    • Still wish they’d allow to disable “dive” mode for 1-3 hours then have it automatically re-enable after a set time. I have over 200 dives just teaching in a pool.

Odie21 We are still looking into your feature request and how best to do it. Until that time, the best option would be to start a Swim Activity since you would be able to discard the activity's information after your teaching time in the pool is over.
Another option that might work for you is using the Apnea Dive option, which will group all those dives into one saved activity.

  • If they allow you to have an application running, which disables the “Dive Mode”, then one would think that they’d allow the user to disable the “Dive Mode” for a few hours.

This current Garmin logic makes no sense. All you’d have to do is have an option to disable from 1-3 hours and then it would be automatically “re-enabled” after the selected expired.
