Descent utility/ server issue

I currently own several Garmin devices 5s, 5, Descent, Edge 1030.... The Descent could be my default watch if it had a few simple simple things that the 5 has viz.
1. Advanced sleep monitoring
2. All day stress
3. Would be nice to have PayWave, possibly music, but they might be harder to implement
I'm sure a lot of these could be implemented with a software update easily. I use the 5 everyday and the Descent on diving trips, would like to rationalise to just 1 unit.

How hard is it to do this?

Second question is , what is going on with the server, maybe it is specific to Australia or Asia/Pacific, but while all my other devices sync and connect with the servers without incident, the Descent has been unable to do so for months, get "we are having a problem connecting to our servers" message every time. This has persisted in spite of uninstalling and reinstalling software on the computer, and updating directly via wifi.

Are others having this issue?
  • I have no idea, but have you perhaps an APAC model and there is no newer fw at the moment available? If not, have you tried to use the garmin webupdater?
  • I do have an APAC version, I’m in Australia, which is why I don’t want to try the web updater. It is my understanding that 4.00 should be available on all Mk1 versions.
  • OK... really weird. Without my Mk1 connected to Express, I chose View Details to the "Map Updates" and 4.00 was there in the list. I then connected the Mk1 and it disappeared, however, when I disconnected it again, the update became available on the watch itself. I now have 4.00.
  • So this morning I no longer have the "Sorry, we're having a problem communicating with our servers." error in Garmin Express, however, the update to 4.00 is not there, just some map updates.

I'm still stuck on 2.60 - as I have for over a month!

Few week ago I was able to upgrade my Descent MK1 to v4.00, but now for 2 or 3 weeks I have the same problem as you: I have the latest version of Garmin Express whis is constantly reporting "Sorry, we're having a problem communicating with our servers" and also suggests to updating maps (the same three as you). But the fact is that these maps (exactly the same version) have already been loaded onto my Descent MK1. I am in Europe and I have a European version of Descent.

  • Yeah, the "Sorry, we're having a problem communicating with our servers." error is back this morning for me, too.
  • Everyone, sorry that you are still experiencing this error with Express. I am still working with Garmin's Express IT team to get this issue fixed. Once I have more information on this, I will post here in this thread.

Also, thank you atj777 for that extra information that you provided. I have passed it onto the people that need to know. Also, I'm happy to hear you got the 4.00 software and I look forward to your feedback on that software version after you had some time with it.

If anyone else is having an issue with Express at this time, and not getting the 4.00 software version. I would highly support Volker_I. the suggestion of using WebUpdater. It is not the preferred method of updating your device since the program been available for a long time and do not have the option of Garmin Connect Syncing and Map Updates but since it has been available for such a long time I trust it to be able to get you any unit software update that is available if Express is not available.
  • Strange, hasn't stopped working for me. No error messages at all.
  • It comes and goes for me. This morning it is fine. Yesterday I got the error message.
