Descent utility/ server issue

I currently own several Garmin devices 5s, 5, Descent, Edge 1030.... The Descent could be my default watch if it had a few simple simple things that the 5 has viz.
1. Advanced sleep monitoring
2. All day stress
3. Would be nice to have PayWave, possibly music, but they might be harder to implement
I'm sure a lot of these could be implemented with a software update easily. I use the 5 everyday and the Descent on diving trips, would like to rationalise to just 1 unit.

How hard is it to do this?

Second question is , what is going on with the server, maybe it is specific to Australia or Asia/Pacific, but while all my other devices sync and connect with the servers without incident, the Descent has been unable to do so for months, get "we are having a problem connecting to our servers" message every time. This has persisted in spite of uninstalling and reinstalling software on the computer, and updating directly via wifi.

Are others having this issue?
  • Yeah, I have been having the issue with Garmin Express for at least 3 weeks and it has prevented me from getting the latest update (which includes "All Day Stress" and perhaps the "Advanced sleep monitoring", see: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/decent-mk1/1393144-software-version-4-00-now-available-phased-roll-out-100 ). Support have supposedly been working on it and I have sent them logs, etc, but it still doesn't work. I'm in Australia, too.

I'm not sure that PayWave can work as I expect it needs the hardware. I don't believe it is available on the fenix 5X (which is the basis for the Mk1) only in the Plus versions, which probably is where they added the chip.
  • Not sure if you read my post sussamb, I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the software....it works perfectly with the 5s, 5, and Edge 1030, the only item that does not work is the Descent, so firewall software etc. all work with all the other devices. It is a problem specific to the Descent.

Yes, atj777 , I am not fussed about pay wave and music, would like the other 2. I have software version 4, managed, I think by connecting directly to wifi, all of a sudden when I powered down it said updating?? doesn't do advanced sleep, and if I remember correctly it wants a chest strap to do stress monitoring??
  • Work through this FAQ, don't assume everything is correct https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=uZQHyc3C4s2S0wfUYR2QY9

What does that even mean? Some of the FAQ isn't correct?
  • My Mk1 syncs fine with Express so it is talking to the servers!
  • What does that even mean? Some of the FAQ isn't correct?

No, don't assume everything in your system is correct ... It may of course all be correct but no harm in checking as often what's in the FAQ helps many who are having issues.
  • That was a complete waste if time. I won't get that hour back. I went through all the steps and the problem persists.
  • I have seen this problem alluded to elsewhere, and I think it is an Asia Pacific issue, I read somewhere that Garmin was aware of this, I can only imagine it is a low priority as the number of Descents in Australia must be insignificant to the fenix or vivo series. I'm sure one day we will wake up and it will work. It did work initially for like the first month that I had the descent but no longer.

So to be clear it syncs with my phone, just Garmin Connect can't link to the server when I select Descent as the device, if I select the Fenix 5, 5s or Edge1030 as the device, it connects to the server and downloads the appropriate updates.
  • You probably read it here. Support have been working with me. I sent them a file from my Mk1 and they told me it was an Asia Pacific issue and they knew what the problem was. This was a few weeks ago. They then asked for logs from Garmin Express last week. They told me this morning that it was fixed but it isn't.

I really love my Mk1 (and the previous Garmin devices I've had). I really hate the Garmin environment because this sort of thing seems to happen all the time and is so frustrating. It takes them forever to fix what should be simple issues.
  • atj777 Thank you for working with me and testing it again for me.

scarboroughjohn I would be happy to look into what you are reporting too. To do this, please feel free to message me privately and provide me with a good email address for you.
