A few ideas to improve garmin connect to make it more usable for scuba diving

Hi guys,

I'm still trying to find all of the possibilities of Descent MK1 and related applications. Here is a few suggestions for improvement:
1. It would be nice if I have special record for weight used during the dive. I can imagine it could be implemented to the dive setting in the application on the descent. I can imagine it is quite big change, so it would be nice to have this in the web activity review application at least.
2. It would be really nice if it is possible to edit some of the fields for more than one dive at once. For example, for the one diving trip, I usually dive with the same buddy, so I would like to edit this field for selected dives at once. the same for equipment, the same for location.
3. The tank settings - could you imagine you have tank type, material (alu, steel), volume, etc... included in dive settings? Or at least it could be possibly edited in the web activity review?

I hope this could help you to improve customer experience.

  • If I understand correctly what you are asking then #1 and #3 are already part of the connect app and can also be edited on the web version. I would like to see the SAC rate calculated automatically since you can input tank size and pressure and it knows bottom time already. I am sure we will see this eventually though.
  • Yeah, you can already do weight and tank details in both Connect and web, however, the implementation is woeful. You can input decimal points, e.g. 12.2L or 10.5L tank. And SAC ignores the tank size as it is bar/min not L/min (which technically is RMV).

I can't imagine they will every get anything working all that well and you'd be better off with a third party app like:
    • MacDive
    • DivingLog 6.0

which both already support the Mk1, and Subsurface should soon, too.

    Hi,

you are right, it's already implemented. I didn't find it as I was using web interface for the first time.
However,it is possible to change many settings directly in the Descent's dive settings, an it would be fine to set this basic values directly to the watches. Especially weight, and tank settings for the gas mixtures.

Thank you very much for you response. I realized I was not precise enough when I was looking for feateres of the applications.

    Thanks.

I've bought Descent because I like it's one device for almost every single activity I usually do. And I'm sure that feedback is more than appreciated :-)
I'll take a look on that applications.

  • Subsurface v4.8.2 for Windows allows to import dives directly from the dive computer Descent MK1, but it is not possible to import individual FIT files I previously downloaded to my PC.
  • I don't have a windows machine available to try, but a quick test on Linux indicates that it simply expects the FIT files to be found in the Garmin/Activity subdirectory underneath whatever location you choose. So if you drop the files into C:\Descent\Garmin\Activity (for example) and tell Subsurface to look at C:\Descent, the import will most likely work.

EDIT: Unfortunately, this workaround doesn't appear to be valid on Windows.
  • I must be dense. I can't find Garmin support anywhere in Subsurface 4.8.2 on Mac. It's not in Import from dive computer nor Import log files
  • Yeah, that was me that reported it and Dirk rebuilt the DMG.
