Breaking the Computer

OK, it's the engineer in me to want to test things to failure; better a controlled failure than a Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

I'm curious to know if any owners have done a deco-dive and CRITICALLY breached the ascent rate.
Will the software allow you to go back to depth and recompensate, or worse still does it have a panic crisis and lockout.

Back in the day, my dive buddies would trial new computers by attaching a computer to an SMB during our deco stops and then observing the reaction of the software. In a second trial we'd retrieve the unit back to the deco bar and see what the software would do.

Yes, the things you do when you're bored hanging off a deco bar lol.
  • Descent Mk1 will alert the user in the event of a rapid ascent and breached deco ceilings. The diver will not be locked out in-dive, allowing them to recover and complete a safe ascent. Missed decompression will result in lockout after the dive ends if lockout is enabled. Lockout can be disabled before or after a dive, even if the computer is in a lockout condition.

  • Thanks for the reply; can you actually run through what the computer does during a breached deco ceiling?

    1. Diver breaches deco ceiling (example deco stop of 20')
    2. Diver returns to previous deco depth
    > Does the computer then allow for the compensation (example now forcing a 30' deco stop + 5' stop at 10m)

    1. Diver breaches ascent rate
    2. Diver stops ascent and commences diving again
    >what will the computer now assume? does the dive continue or does an alternative ascent rate get calculated.

    FINALLY:
Can the garmin dive planner take input live from the dive?

On surface dive plan: 1. descend 30m. 2. decend to 40m. 3. commence slow surface
On dive: descend to 30m (click input on computer to commence this phase), descend to 40m (click so next phase sharts), commence ascent (click to start ascent phase).
