course updates failed via Garmin express; had to reset watch

Tried several times to install all 3 course map files (North & South America, Europe/Mideast/Africa, Pacific) without success. Message was "error installing the update". (Other symptoms were "maps missing" & "no nearby courses".)  Garmin support rep sent me the procedure below to reformat watch on a PC. Didn't solve the problem but a "master reset" finally did (see hyperlink below).

I asked rep if North & South American maps only could be installed to save space and install time. Was told no, there's plenty of room on S20 for all 3 sets, but I only see 3 of 60 MB left. So, seems to me, space will be an issue at some point as new courses are added. An option to install maps for my part of the world only would be nice.

The process for formatting is intended for PC only. It is not recommended to format this device using a Mac.

To format the watch:

  1. Ensure no other devices are connected to your computer, such as a printer, external hard drive, or flash drive
  2. Connect the watch to the computer
  3. On the keyboard, select the Windows key + E key
  4. Right Click on the Garmin drive (may appear as a letter drive)
  5. Select Format
  6. Check Quick Format, if it’s not already
  7. Select Start
  8. On the warning, select OK or Yes
  9. Once the format is complete, close the window and disconnect the watch
  10. When the watch displays the time, reconnect to the computer
  • If the 3 regional course map image files that contain all 41,000+ courses worldwide become too large for your Approach S20, Garmin Express will have you choose the region you live in. Since it has become less common for a new golf courses to be built, space will likely not be an issue in the future.

  • Thanks for the reply. Good to know space not likely to be an issue and there's a workaround if it is, but an option to update just the regional map needed would also save install time.

Thanks for taking the time to post this.  I had the same issue which was also fixed with a master reset.

  • Have done soft and full reset for my S20, now all i get it the garmin logo and nothing else.  its not even being recognized as a drive in file explorer

  • I am sorry to hear you are having this issue. I will  be sending you a private message so that I can assist you further. Thank you.

  • I was also having problems including getting to 99.9% and then failing.  I thought about it a bit and realized I have some scanners on my PC that constantly scan for issues.  I disabled them all during the latest attempt and it completed successfully.  Just one data point, but something to think about.

  • I tried loading the new maps today and now my S20 is not working either.  It failed to load the course map and now my PC wants to format the watch the second I plug it into the USB drive.  I tried to reformat as mentioned above and then load the courses again and it again failed and wants me to reformat again.  Extremely frustrating!!!

I tried a third time and it appears to have worked - not sure why but will see if it is working properly next week when I play again.

  • Watched failed mid-round, reset to "No Maps found".  Tried soft reset, hard reset, uninstall Garmin Express, and reformatting the watch hard drive as described above,  yet it still updates to 99% and then fails.  Need some help Garmin!

  • If possible you can try another computer, otherwise please contact Golf Product Support. We would be happy to further assist.

  • Thank you - I disabled the McAfee firewall for map upload and it worked!  Now my question is, with the watch hard drive re-formatted, will I lose all my previous scorecards that were synched through Garmin Connect?
