Maps disappear during round?

Has anyone else experienced the following? Today in the middle of a round I looked down at my Approach S20 and found the Garmin logo present on the screen. Pushing buttons did not cause the logo to disappear and, after a few minutes, the screen indicated that "all maps were missing". Soon thereafter another message popped up indicating a software update was available and it began installing. After this installation, the watch returned to its default screen (current time). When I then attempted to start the golf mode once again, the watch looked for nearby courses but came back and indicated none were available (presumably as all the maps had been erased).

Upon arriving home I connected the Approach S20 to computer and synced with Garmin Express and it appeared the courses were again loaded.

What happened to the Approach S20 today? Is this a sign of the watch failing? I don't want to again find myself in the middle of a round and the golf mode of this watch fail.
