Loading KMZ files onto 760i

I have KMZ map files loaded onto a microSD inserted into my 760i. What next? How do I access the maps? Note that I cannot load maps from my computer because it is a Mac running the latest OS and it refuses to acknowledge that my Garmin exists as a drive when connected by cable, despite Garmin Express being able to update software etc etc. (I have followed all the instructions in the manual about connecting to the computer, and followed all the troubleshooting tips.)

  • You can access files on the 760i from macOS but you need a third party application for it. The 760i uses a different way to communicate between the device and a computer called MTP, and unfortunately macOS has very limited support for MTP. As a result, the device will not show up in Finder.

A free tool you can use is OpenMTP. The interface is a bit clunky but it works. There are also paid apps, like Macdroid or Commander One.

One note though, on macOS only one application can exclusively access an MTP device. This means that you have to fully exit Garmin Express (or Basecamp if you use that) before using a tool like OpenMTP. By default Express keeps running in the background, so you have to fully quit the app.

  • Thank you, Jim, OpenMTP did the trick.
