Does live tracking auto start when 700i unit is turned on.

I did a moto ride and im worried live tracking has started automatically 9321 points recorded for the 11hr trip? im hoping its just recorded on my device and not uploaded it live via satellite $1864?? can someone please enlighten me im a bit concerned?

  • An 11 hour trip would result in around 60 to 70 tracking points, assuming the default interval of 10 minutes, so it seems unlikely the 9321 points are inReach tracking points.

Where do you see the 9321 points recorded? It sounds likely that those are the points recorded in the on-device activity recording.

See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=xxiwU2JZAwAtR74TqEz1V8 for a support article that explains the difference between tracking (sending location via satellite network) versus activity recording (recording a log of your track locally on the device).

  • Thanks for your reply after further reading looks like you are correct. the 700i doesnt do live tracking it self but will when using garmin connect and i havent set live tracking up on that yet. huge relief   thanks again

  • There are different ways to use tracking:

    • inReach tracking where the device will periodically send your location via the satellite network. These tracking points can be viewed on Garmin Explore
    • there is MapShare Tracking, where you can share a link to a web page where others can view your location and send a message
    • there is LiveTrack where others can follow your location.

LiveTrack is in turn possible in two ways:

    • via Garmin Connect, where your location is shared via the Connect app and the data connection of your phone.
    • via inReach, where your location is shared via the satellite network.

The different types of LiveTracking are explained at https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=dTKb0UdhsZ3g1n3czgF9V8.

  • To be clear, track points sent via satellite are visible on your MapShare page.

MapShare also provides the ability for the viewer to request your location or send you a message. Those functions are somewhat unreliable. Your device must be on and have a clear view of the sky for them to work at all.

You can also see the sent points on the Map tab at explore.garmin.com when logged into  your account.

They are visible in the Explore app on a paired phone, but that helps nobody but you.

Once you sync the device, the recorded activity points become visible on MapShare and the map tab for your account at explore.garmin.com. This is going to be a much smoother track than the sent points. On a good day, the sent points and the recorded activity points will be combined on the map web pages.

Finally, note that there are setup options on the device for two things.

    1) Linking sent points and activity recording. When linked, starting one starts the other. Stopping one stops or pauses the other.

    2) Start recording on power-up ("auto-track"). If you turn this on, you may get a lot of recorded points you don't want. For example, if you power  up in your driveway, drive 200 miles to the trail head, then start hiking - you will have 200 miles of useless highway recordings. OTOH, it's all fine (and you won't forget to start tracking) if you do not power up until you get to the trail head.

None of this has anything to do "LiveTrack" and the connect mobile app, which depends on a cell connection.

  •  guess your post was meant as a reply to ?

Well that's not actually true anymore. Garmin seems to have (silently) introduced LiveTrack for inReach. On Garmin Explore web you can choose to use LiveTrack via inReach instead of MapShare. The link in my previous post explains the differences between MapShare and LiveTrack for inReach.

  • My bad. Sort of. I mainly wanted to clarify the distinction between sent and logged (activity) points, as well as the setup options which control this.

I am unclear as to the benefit of "LIveTrack for inReach" vs. the standard inReach sent points tracking. Looks like a matter of personal preference as to where you (or your home audience) want to view the data. You cannot enable "LiveTrack for inReach" from the device. You must use one of the gazillion Garmin mobile apps for this. I (personally) stay as far away from the mobile apps as possible :-D

  • Just got my bill from garmin somehow its tracked 139 points and ive been billed $0.20 for each.
