Garmin Montana 750i Shuts Down when Put into Expedition Mode

I purchased 2 Montana 750i GPS units. They both exhibited the same problem: When putting the units in Expedition Mode, the units shut off.

In a properly working unit, Expedition Mode puts the unit into a low-battery state and a green light flashes at regular intervals. A user can still receive messages in Expedition Mode. Both of my units remained in Expedition Mode for about 15 minutes before shutting completely down.

The only way to power the unit back up was to remove the battery and re-insert it or hold down the power-on button for an extended period of time.

The reason this feature is important to me is because it extends battery life a ton. Because the feature failed, I had to keep the unit on at all times which meant frequent charging by running my F350 truck...expensive. And, I could not leave camp on an extended trip.

There's more.

The unit also showed a warning message every 15 seconds or so saying that it had lost satellite reception. This could not possibly be an accurate and true warning because there were 3 other members in our group with other Garmin GPS units, (different models), that had no problems with satellite reception. Additionally, the unit worked great with no "lost satellite" warnings until the Expedition Mode problem started. The false message invariably drained the battery even further because it would illuminate the screen every 15 seconds.

I would like Garmin to send a free Montana 750i to me that works.

  • I’d suggest opening a support case with Garmin. The forums are not an official support channel, and if you can reproduce the issue with two units it sounds like a bug.

and what firmware versions where the devices on? The latest available (at this time) is 20.50. If the devices are not on that version updating may help. It will also be the first thing Garmin Support will ask.

  • When you power a Montana 750i up it has a warning message that says something like, "Make sure you have an active subscription before you start your adventure, otherwise your GPS may not work right."

If updating your GPS is also a requirement before heading out, then that warning should also pop up when the unit is powered on.

No one expects to have to update their new F350 King Ranch pick up truck when leaving the dealer's parking lot and neither did I expect to have to update my GPS when I purchased it and headed to the wilderness...especially when there are no warnings from the manufacturer to do so. Plus, there are multiple reviews where others are experiencing the same problem which was not fixed by updating the unit.

I am not interested in opening a support case with Garmin...I was employed in the outdoors for over 60 days and I sent them an InReach message from the wilderness and I expected an answer. There was none. My trip is over and I will need to find another source of technology to stay in reach next time.

  • Just trying to help here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Apparently you're not really open to that so best of luck with finding an alternative product.
