Montana 750i keeps turning off

About; Montana 750I

Firmware version: 19.20

During use, the device regularly shuts down.

The battery is fully charged.

Device is not connected to an external power supply.

What's the problem here?

  • Garmin. Garmin is the problem.

They have ruined the firmware/software causing conflicts and the device shutting down.

Even rolling back to 19.0 isn't resolving it anymore.

Removing any SD card with maps helps but whatever they have done is causing major worldwide issues.

Be better off with a GPSMap or eTrex to be honest.

  • It’s a piece of s* mine keeps rebooting and turning off.. a disaster!

  • I've had a similar problem with my 750i, specifically when navigating using the TopoActive map. It happens whether the map is on internal storage or a microSD card. When I turn the unit back on, it resumes navigating to my selected destination, but I would have missed any turn alerts while it was shut down.

It doesn't happen when I navigate using Open Street Map Topo U.S. West. I've been communicating with Garmin front-line support about the problem since October 30th. The person I have direct contact with issued a ticket and referred it to "the investigating team." So far, I haven't heard anything back from them. I have no idea how diligently it is being investigated.

If a number of people are having the problem, we really need to make a ruckus about it until Garmin fixes it. My first experience with the Montana was that there wasn't sufficient internal storage to update one of the preinstalled maps. I had to move it to an SD card to update the map. I suspect that inadequate resources may be involved in causing the Montana to shut down.

In the meantime, you might try using Open Street Map, particularly if the problem occurs while you are navigating.

  • Open a support ticket. Based on forum posts by Garmin staff, all of the common Montana shutdown problems (those not related to the mount)( have been addressed. Garmin believes that remaining problems are somehow related to specific settings on the device. They want to gather additional information via support tickets.

Edited to add: You do not say what f/w version you have. The OP had 19.20. Note that 19.20 is several releases behind current as of 11/23.24. You may find that current f/w no longer has the problem. In any case, updating to the current version is the first thing support will ask you to do.

  • According to Garmin Express, the software version is 22.70. Is that the same as the firmware?

I updated to TopoActive NA, US 2024.20 yesterday and took it out for a navigated 1-hour round trip hike today. The unit shut down after 15, 30, and 45 minutes, give or take a minute or two. When I arrived back home at 60 minutes, I waited a few minutes just to see whether it would shut down 'on schedule'. It didn't until I touched the settings button, at which time it shut down again. I don't know whether this was because it had been about 15 minutes from the previous shut down, something to do with pressing the button, or an interaction of the two.

I will go ahead and file a ticket on it but, in the meantime, are there any specific settings I should be looking at that could be problematic?

    Thank you,

    Terry

  • Current fw does still have all these issues.

one thing I tried last week was to alter the tracking/record settings from auto as suggested on here.

First time since the issues began that there has not been a single reboot/shutdown however there was also an auto update at switch on so it needs assessment to what exactly helped
