Whenever I go hiking I immediately see the value of ascent going up .... much more then the actual.
I went for a hike 12m up and the montana showed 68m ...
Why do I get such erroneous values ?

That's not actually horrible. Remember that the vertical error in a 3D GPS fix is much larger than the horizontal error. I do not know if anything other than the GPS information comes into play here. For example, I don't know whether or not the altimeter comes into play.
Thank you for you reply.
I do think it is the altimeter. Should I switch it off to use only GPS attitude?
There is one more thing I consider to be the cause, I put the device in the pocket of my trousers, might that cause a compression/decompression at each step that makes the altimeter go crazy ?
For short hikes, set altimeter to calibrate continuously. For longer hikes, set altimeter to calibrate once only.
