Can the mapping service/company onX with their Offroad maps be loaded and used for the Garmin Montana 700-series?
If the answer is yes, is it best to use the Garmin Explore app to facilitate the process?
Thanks.

According to the onX site, the Montana 700 is not compatible with their onX chip (which is the GPS handheld version of their maps). Also the onX Chip appears to be discontinued.
And even if it were, Garmin Explore would not play a role in this because Garmin Explore cannot copy or sync maps with the Montana. Only activities, waypoints, routes, tracks and courses can be synced.
Thanks JungleJim,
Especially regarding Garmin Explore. I'm a newbie here on Garmin ownership so starting from ground zero.
So from what I gather, one can't create maps from onX, say as a .KMZ file and load that file onto a Garmin Montana? (I just learned there is such a thing as a .KMZ file yesterday.) I find onX trail maps and information to be exceptionally nice for trails but see a limitation once cell signals goes away.
I think what you want here is what Garmin calls a "custom map". You need a JPEG image of the map. Then you use Google Earth to georeference the image. The result is a KMZ file which you can then put on the device.

It's been a while since I have done this. Cannot vouch for the accuracy of the step by step instructions in either article. But the principle has not changed.
Thanks Twolpert!
I’ll give those articles some study.
This rookie needs to up his skill set as I believe the 700 series has very good capability. I just need to learn how to make the most of it.
Offline maps is a thing for onX…
