How do I get Satellite Imagery to save to the SD Card?

Back when it was called Birds Eye I was saving all downloads to the SD card.  A few weeks ago I had a Montana 700i incident ;) that involved the unit being run over by cars and needing to be replaced.  Fortunately, Garmin has a refurbished program and I have a replacement.

However, I have not been able to find how to direct the Map Manager_Outdoor Maps+_Satellite Imagery downloads to the microSD card.   Is that possible now?

  • Used basecamp instead of Map Manager.
Transfer an unlimited number of BirdsEye satellite and aerial image segments to your device or your microSD card with BaseCamp software.

  • At least when you "download maps here" from the map page, you can control this. Although it's not obvious. From the map page after you request the "download here", the dashboard at the top has an edit button (pencil icon). Tap the dashboard. On the resulting page, you can control the layers to be downloaded. You can also control the destination (second line from the top, headed "Storage Location". Tap there to change the destination.

I have a vague recollection that this is also possible with Maps+ subscription downloads.  Invoked via Main Menu > Map Manager > Outdoor Maps+ > + Add. Can't test it right now because the function fails on my device right now. Shows requesting map update data briefly, then lands on Where To? No clue. Might be because I am inside and do not have fix?

  • Excellent direction on this one.  Thank you.  Download does not work if you do not have wireless; at least that's what my Montana told me today when I tried to get a map while hiking.

Anyway; your reply was right on target. Once in Outdoor Maps+ then tap on Add Satellite Imagery

When the display settles there is a pencil in the upper right corner.  Tap it, then Tap Storage Location.  Select either SD Card or Internal.  Once set it seems to stay that way until changed.

The funny and sad part is that I was there when I wanted to rename a download.  It never occurred to me that I could tap on the "Storage Location" line and change it.   That's if I even focused on it to begin with.  All I was interested in at the time was changing the name.

  • Does BaseCamp take care of making them available from the new location?  Is there a database or internal structure that needs to move as well?

Now that I know how to direct the downloads I could also deleted the ones I've downloaded and repeat the downloads.  It's only 16 of them that I would have to do.  I'm thinking this would keep data integrity intact.

  • Yes, you do need WiFi connectivity to download direct to the device. If you have cellular data (internet) connectivity in the field, you can get the maps at least as far as the phone. On the Map screen in the app, tap the layer icon in the top left corner. On the resulting Map Settings page, tap Maps. On the next page, tap Download Maps. Follow the somewhat cryptic steps (with regard to location) from there to download maps to the phone.

I don't THINK there is any way to get them from the phone to the device. The BT connection to the device is also fairly low bandwidth. But I do not know this for a fact. I always download maps to the device at home, where I have a WiFi connection.

  • Wiht BaseCamp, you adjust BirdsEye selection area as desired, and download.

And you view all your BirdsEye imagery in BaseCamp.

BirdsEye maps are stored in BaseCamp and always available.

These archived BirdsEye files can be copied to the GPS when necessary.

  • Twolpert, select the category you want from the Where To? Options to choose where the imagery will be downloaded. All explained on the other website.

  • Thanks. That did not occur to me. Was expecting the map panning like the other approach.

  • Yes,  you can still get that by selecting the Map icon from that list!
