Montana 700 seen in Device Manager, Not This Computer

Wow, this was a bizarre experience.  I am l having nearly the exact same problem, talked with Garmin about it today, and am also named Jim.  Wondered if I'd posted this in a state of hallucination!

Hope someone can help with this.

I had tried using Device Manager to uninstall the device, and also to update the driver.  Only impact of the former was that now it shows up under Other devices as 'unknown device" while before it showed up as a "Garmin" device.

Windows HAD read it 3 days ago, when I used it to roll back the firmware again, (since 13.20 has not been replaced yet with an editing that doesn't stop the 700i from routing).  But when I tried to reconnect to my PC yesterday, one hears the PC read it, sometimes it beeps on and off as it disconnects and reconnects, usually ends up on, but isn't showing up in windows explorer or Basecamp, so you can't change firmware, add routes and waypoints, upload tracks and waypoints, use the map on your GPS in Basecamp, etc.

And likely unrelated, my 700i is also not charging while turned on (only maintaining powe) either in its powered Garmin mount or connected to a PC or charger plugged into 110 current.  

Not good, to put it nicely. Especially since I was going to cross the border into Mexico today for a multi month Latin American ride.

This smacks of a cable issue, or an issue with the connector on the device. Usually when you hear the connect/disconnect in rapid succession it's a physical connection issue. The fact that it will not charge also suggests a connection problem.

You might fiddle with the physical connection (for example, wiggling the connector at one end or the other) to see if it aggravates the problem. Same with flexing the cable itself.

If you have a different DATA cable (not a charge-only cable), try that. If you have a different port on the PC try that. 

If none of that helps, open a support ticket. (Offhand, i do not know what you need to do to sort things out after removing the Garmin drivers that way.)

After tons of TS by garmin, replaced unit, all is good to go.....
