iR Tracking - Link with Recording

Hi folks,

Under iR settings there is the option 'Link with Recording' which I understood to mean the iR tracking starts and stops with activity recording. However, it seems that whatever I set 'Link with Recording' to be, the iR tracking always starts and stops with the activity. This includes if the activity is auto-paused due to slow movement speed, which I do not want.

Am I missing something here?

Thank you,

Chris.

  • The published INTENT is to link tracking (iR sent points) and recording (logged points, AKA activity recording) in such a way that they start/stop together. This is supposed to occur without any user interaction - no pop-up warnings or anything like that.

I do not know about auto-pause. I you don't like that behavior, turn auto-pause off.

  • Thank you for your reply, as always.

Reading online, it seems to suggest that on a professional plan, one can choose the iR tracking interval when stationary. Presumably for a non-professional plan, they don't want iR tracking to happen when stationary. Perhaps that is why iR tracking always seems to stop for me, despite the 'Link with Recording' setting being off.

I am coming to the conclusion that this auto starting and pausing causes me more problems than it brings solutions. Your suggestion of turning auto-pause off is a good one. I read a reply of yours on another thread that you turned off the auto-start to keep things clean. I think that's the conclusion I'm coming to as well.

The minimum speed for auto-pause activities is something like 1.5mph which is presumably down to the GPS resolution. On the weekend, we did a hike in a remote location with young children. For about an hour we moved slowly to throw stones in the water, look at plants and so on. For that entire hour, iR tracking showed nothing at all! Slow moving for several hours could mean no iR tracking whatsoever!

    Time to turn it off.

    Thank you once again,

    Chris.

  • Cannot speak to professional plans. On a consumer plan, the iR "sending interval" automatically changes to 4 hours when the unit is stationary. The unit continues to check at the configured send interval to see if it is again moving. If so, it reverts to the configured send interval. This saves Iridium traffic and battery (and, on some plans, point costs). If you're not moving, there is no point in sending a point every 10 minutes or whatever.

I don't know how far you have to move to be considered "moving again". Field experience indicates that it's not very far. If you've actually started moving again, even very slowly, the unit will certainly detect it.

Note that the automatic switch to 4 hour intervals has nothing to do with the auto-pause thing. It is strictly related to iR sent points and whether or not the unit moves "at least some minimum distance" during the configured send interval.

  • Right, I had a methodical play with my 700i, on a consumer plan, trying different iR tracking settings as I went. What I said in my original post didn't stand up when experimenting. My results are below but these are my conclusions:

    1. Whenever iR tracking is started (either manually or automatically at device start up) activity recording will start. iR tracking cannot take place without activity recording, regardless of the 'Auto Start' setting for activity recording.
    2. If you stop iR tracking manually then activity recording will:
      1. Pause - If activity recording started because you started iR tracking manually; or
      2. Continue - If activity was already recording when you started iR tracking manually;
    3. With 'Link with Recording' set to ON, starting or stopping iR tracking will start or stop activity recording respectively.

  • Now that you mention it, I seem to recall having problems with activity pause/resume vs. iR sending. It was the dependency on "how" the recording started that made it hard to keep straight. That may well have been before the advent of the "link recording" option. I don't remember. But it made me paranoid. Whenever I make a manual changes to either side (recording or tracking), I always check the other side to make sure it did what I expected/wanted..
