If you BOUGHT the map on an SD card direct from Garmin, just move the card. If you bought a download map and copied it to an SD card, it is locked to the unit in which you first inserted the SD card. You cannot move it.
Note: For maps purchased on an SD card, moving the card is the ONLY way to do it. You cannot copy the card, or copy the card to internal memory, or whatever.
Yes - bought the card, I'll try to move it again.
stay tuned!
Now that I think of it, it may have been a download. One would think that based on the costs of these units, and that they wont repair the 600 and how much we spend on map upgrades Garmin would at least offer a discount on a repurchase of the same map.
I'm trying to verify the mode of purchase...
Thanks for the reply - I now see other posts about this now that I've drilled down a bit.
Once upon a time, there was a discount on updates for maps purchased via download or on DVD. That is no longer the case. Maps purchased on SD card were never updatable.
The actual topography on the 24K topos is unlikely to change. Tree cover might. And, of course, any roads they show would be subject to change.
I have the Montana 750i that has the North America maps installed and my understanding it comes with a lifetime of free updates, but does it actually update when new streets or tunnels are built and if not, what exactly does an update entail?
It's not a real-time update. If updated maps are available, Garmin Express will install them when you connect to a PC and do a sync.
Any actual changes are at the pleasure of Garmin (an whoever provides them with the maps). I have a vague recollection that the built-in maps get an update twice a year.
