Montana 750i shuts down when using custom groups of maps

Dear developers/forum members,

I created some custom groups of maps.

I find this feature very effective and one of the most interesting improvements over the montana series.

The fact is that since these group has been created the unit became instable.

The unit shuts down:

-after the initial map loading has been completed

-when the map groups icon located in the map screen is tapped

-when a group of map is selected from the side bar invoked by the map groups button

if the previous actions didn't cause a shut down in the immediate, this will happen randomly after a while.

This happens only with custom groups of maps created by the user.

When custom groups of maps has been removed the unit operates correctly.

The memory that hosts the mapsets (intermal or SD Card) is not involved: I tested with maps installed into the internal memory and SD Card and the behaviour is the very same

Tested with different groups of maps and with a group containing a single mapset (every single mapset tested)

Thank your very much indeed for you support.

Best regards.

Andrew.

Montana 750i, FW 10.90,

Internal Memory: CN Europe NT 2020.10 - Id. 8041 TopoActive Europe 2020.10 North East - Id. 8547

SD Card 64 Gb: TrekMap Italia v2 - Id. 2212 T4A Maps - Traveller's Africa 16.10.01 - Id. 8020 Topo Deutschland (Nord) - Id. 535 Topo Deutschland (Sud) - Id. 534 Topo Oesterreich - Id. 706 Topo Custom created maps in the .img format - Id. 9901 to 9970

  • Thank you , I´m going to check it and I´ll tell what then.

  • Sorry, renaming the SQL directory didn't solve.

The issue arises in the same way.

  • OK, next test:

Clear all custom map sets, then make new sets using only Garmin maps pre-loaded on the Montana 7x0.

Does the crash still occure when enabling or disabling these map sets?

  • Testing with Garmin pre-loaded maps I discovered that:

-CN EU West -> Crash (3,26 GB)

-CN EU East -> OK (2,91 GB)

-TopoActive EU NE -> Crash (3,27 GB)

-TopoActive EU SW -OK  (2,88 GB)

The first thing I noticed about these maps-sets is the file size: > 3 GB = crash...

    More tests:

    -Garmin WorldMap v.5, 181 MB -> OK

    -Custom created raster maps (.img format), 1 map-set, 1GB  - -> OK

-Custom created raster maps (.img format), 8 map-sets, 7GB total - -> crash

Perhaps is there a non documented file-size/max-number-of-segments limit per group of maps? ...Or it is a bug?

  • Interesting.

So, each time you experience the crash, the total GB of the custom map set combined is > 3 GB?

And each time there is no crash, the total GB is < 3 GB?

    Which Firmware version?

  • Yes, I do confirm. So it is. > 3 Gb = crash

    FW is 10.90

I also reverted to 10.50, just to try: same behaviour.

I was not able to find any other previous FW over the internet or pointing to the usual www8. etc. URL

  • Unfortunately, the next step is a hard reset of the device. You will need to copy any important information from the device (tracks, waypoints, etc.) as all user data will be cleared during the process. Then you can rebuild your settings from a fresh restart and retest.

    • How do I Master Reset my Montana 7x0?
      • Power the Montana 7x0 off.
      • Remove battery pack for >30 seconds and reinstall.
      • Press and hold the Power button until the Status LED turns red.
      • Release the Power button.
      • The Montana 7x0 is now in 'Boot Block' mode, which last about 8 seconds.
      • Quickly press and release the Power button twice.
      • The Status LED will turn green, and the device will begin the boot process.
      • A "Restoring settings and activities to defaults." message will be displayed.
      • The Montana 7x0 is now clearing all data and restoring all settings to factory defaults.
  • Yep, already done!

    Two times.

    Didn’t solve, unfortunately.

  • Well then, it is what you are NOT telling us that is the issue.

I have two Montana 7x0, both with custom map sets that are > 6 GB in size, and they have no crashes.

After the hard reset, with only the Garmin pre-installed maps on the device, and a microSD card no larger than 32GB, this will not happen.

What are the missing steps, missing maps, missing information that you have not yet told us?

  • First of all: I'm very grateful for your support and the time you are dedicating to my issue. I hope it will be useful for others, too.

I tried to be the more accurate possible in my reports; I have some knowledge of Garmin's technology, maps architecture and some basic programming knowledge but I'm not a programmer nor an engineer, so I beg you pardon if I'm not able to give more accurate feedbacks. I'm sorry also fo my poor knowledge of your beautiful language: maybe this not helps.

Anyway... you gave me a hint.

You said that your GPSr have no issues and, for I'm not prone to consider this an hardware issue (even if I have had with Garmin's GPSr and I had them replaced) I tried to reproduce... not my issue but your exact configuration, as suggested.

So I tried once more to do a master reset, I didn't install the SD and I creatd maps-sets only with the Garmin pre-installed maps.

And, you are right... I had no issues !

So I tried to recall what I did in my previous tests.

    1) I configured the unit for my region

    2) I saved my setup into a profile file

    3) I always loaded my profile file before beginning to test

This last time I DIDN'T CHANGE CONFIGURATION, I left English as language and I didn't change any other setting.

So I thought the problem was in the profiles file.

I loaded it and the unit become unstable.

I deleted that file but the unit was unstable all the same.

    so... what?

I changed language into english and after that the unit worked correctly.

I changed language into Italian once more and, after a while the issue arised.

I changed once more the language into english ad it seems to work well.

I'm still trying to change maps-sets with the unit's language set to english while writing this post and I have no issues.

I have made videos to document the issue.

Feel free to ask whatever question may be useful: I'have not the imagination (nor the experience) of a programmer.

Tomorrow I will test the GPSr on the field with the "english" setup and I hope to confirm what I've tested in these 2 last hours this evening.

Not a problem if I'm compelled to use the unit in english, anyway I think that if confirmed this should be fixed.

It would be interesting to know the system language is using rafahu and if he confirms what I (maybe) discovered.

    PS:

anyway the mapset file size seems to have a role in all this. Or filename? Header? Does the system language affect some system resource? Code page issues? not the first time ;-)

italian + mapset > 3 GB does not work

    italian + mapset < 3 GB works

    English + mapset > 3 GB works
