Montana 750i shuts down when using custom groups of maps

Dear developers/forum members,

I created some custom groups of maps.

I find this feature very effective and one of the most interesting improvements over the montana series.

The fact is that since these group has been created the unit became instable.

The unit shuts down:

-after the initial map loading has been completed

-when the map groups icon located in the map screen is tapped

-when a group of map is selected from the side bar invoked by the map groups button

if the previous actions didn't cause a shut down in the immediate, this will happen randomly after a while.

This happens only with custom groups of maps created by the user.

When custom groups of maps has been removed the unit operates correctly.

The memory that hosts the mapsets (intermal or SD Card) is not involved: I tested with maps installed into the internal memory and SD Card and the behaviour is the very same

Tested with different groups of maps and with a group containing a single mapset (every single mapset tested)

Thank your very much indeed for you support.

Best regards.

Andrew.

  • Although Garmin employees sometimes read and (less frequently) comment on forum posts, this is not an official support channel. You should open a support ticket. Phone or chat works much better than email.

  • I have zero issues with custom map sets,  must be one of the map files you are using.  Try to determine which map that is so we can get this resolved. Also, change to 32GB microSD card,  the Montana does not support 64GB.

  • Hello, Thank you for your support.

The issue is not related to custom maps.

It is related to (custom) GROUPS OF MAPS: this is a new function that allows users to create groups of maps and then activate them "on-the-fly" by tapping on the "three-layers-icon" you can find on the map screen (just under the +/- zoom buttons).

Yes, you can create a group of custom maps, if you like, but this is not my scenario.

I created groups of vectorial, .img maps. (BTW: each map, if not part of a "group of maps", works perfectly)

SD card is not a problem: I tested the "groups of maps" feature with maps installed on the internal memory and even removing the SD card.

I would like to discover whether someone else is experiencing this problem.

Maybe I wrong something... or it is a bug...

  • Hello, thank you for you reply.

I contacted both Garmin Italy (I'm italian) and Garmin US.

I sent an email to the beta staff, too.

  • I understand what the Custom Map Sets are - I want you to tell me which map is always present as part of the group when the crash occurs.

  • Hello,

In my case is a 700i and the same. I created a group of maps adding 3 OSM  and the unit shtut down as well, after that I created 3 diferents group of maps wwith just only 1 map in each group and the unit go unstable and shutted down.

Another Garmin fantastic bug. How is it possible? Lunching a amazing GPS and beeing so stupid with the software

    Sorry

    Rafa

  • Seems everyone just wants to complain, while not providing any useful information to those trying to help. A shame....

  • Tested with:

    Map Group 1: "Topo"
    TrekMap Italia v2 - Id. 2212
Topo Deutschland (Nord) - Id. 535
Topo Deutschland (Sud) - Id. 534
    Topo Oesterreich - Id. 706

Map Group 2: "TrekMap" (just one map)
    TrekMap Italia v2 - Id. 2212

    Map Group 3: "Raster"
Topo raster maps in the .img format - Id. 9901 to 9970 (not kmz custom maps)

-Each group has been tested separately (no other groups created in the map group list, except the testing one)
-Each group has been tested with its mapsets loaded into:

    1)Internal Memory and then
    2)SD Card

SD card has been removed when testing map groups built with mapsets loaded into the internal memory

  • Before any other tests:

Rename the Garmin/SQL folder to 'SQLx' on the GPSr and micro SD card,  then reboot and retest.

  • In my case is as simple as this:

1.- Create a group of maps (named: Marruecos) and then add three maps (OSM-Morocco ; Africa North (other OSM) and Morocco-OSM (from alternativaslibres)) and I moved the map to Morocco try to zoom and.... Screen freezed and the unit shoot down.

    2. - I Thought it could be due to the size of the group, son then I repeat the same but creating the groups of maps and I add just one map in each group . Result : Same , unstability and shoot down.

3.- Yesterday afternoon having read this thread I maked a new test and I got another fantastyc Sh** from Garmin software , on this time , the unit went unestable and Shoot down again but when  I switched on the unit one of the maps group had disapeared and then , when I touched the screen to take of one group that stands , the unit shooted down , I Tried twice , three o more times but when I started sweating , I remember that I could go into that  menu too by "settings" way and then I was able to delete the two maps group that remain. Then the unity started to worrk again, but I detected that on the standar map group I wasn´t  able to change between Nav map and topo map ( previously I could), I try to change the profile some times and one of them it allows me to do it , so what to said : Isn´t Garmin software a full Sh**? and I don´t make mention to other stupids bug as going to activity and the unit shoot down in other episode.

So in conclusion, I hope this time I don´t just complaint , I hope these little brushstrokes on Garmin software support my opinion about Garmin software , they lunch software without testing it enough.

It is quite difficult trying to explain about the software with such an erratic behavior, I just can describe what I see or detect.

    Thanks, regards

    Rafa
