Downloading photos/pictures from 750i

Is there an obvious way to download photos from the 750i that I'm just missing? My 750i is my first outdoor/mapping Garmin in many years. I've only been dealing with my Fenix watches for the longest time. Well, I did buy an InReach Explorer before this but only used it for a few months before buying my Montana.

But how in the world do I get the pics off the stupid GPS? I've never used BaseCamp. Is that the only way? I forked out the extra money for the camera b/c I could see the utility. If I'm in an area where I'm relying on my Montana for communication, I typically have my phone stashed somewhere for safekeeping. It seems like this could be such a great all-in-one device if Garmin didn't kneecap it at every turn.

Plug the device into your PC so that it mounts as a removable "USB drive". If there are photos on the device, there will be a DCIM folder in the root directory of the drive. This is the same way that digital cameras and cards used in digital cameras work when mounted. You will find your photos south of the DCIM directory.

Ok that’s dead simple. I thought there would be some way to bring it in through the software. But that works, too.

No I’m afraid not. The Montana has the ability to wirelessly transfer pics, points, routes etc to other Garmins. It has the ability to sync via Wi-Fi and or Bluetooth and view data on the Explore app. Why in the world would they not include the ability to download the pics through Explore or some other way to transfer these pics using the unit’s software at the very least when connected via Wi-Fi? I challenge you to even find in the owner’s manual where it gives any idea on how to download pictures.

I don't do BaseCamp. I stay as far away as possible. However, according to the online documentation, you CAN retrieve your photos using BaseCamp. Apparently this feature is cleverly hidden inside the backup function.

That article also gives you instructions for viewing and saving the photos (one at a time) after you do this. It makes it sound like the "backup" really just copies index information - not the entire photo. But I can't really tell. Not being able to tell in general is one of the reasons I don't do BaseCamp :-D

Yep I saw that page. I’d never used basecamp for anything. I only had access to a Mac when I was first digging into this and when I downloaded the Mac version, it seemed like I was stepping into a late 90s early 2000s time warp. Well, maybe I’m just being critical on that point. At any rate…

If you simply Google 'Montana 7x0 wiki' or something similar you will find a website with much more elaborate documentation for your Garmin GPSr.

It's nowhere near as bad as you attempt to make it sound, and BaseCamp is the best device information manager Garmin ever created.

You can always change brands if you are unable to find any joy with your current selection.
