how to go back to older version of firmware

I have an issue with behaviour of the gps with the current version of my firmware and want to try the previous version. The battery save option (where the screen goes to sleep with inactivity) is not working, where you touching the screen does not bring it back. You have to hit the power button and then the back button. This is on the montana 600, but there appears to be no specific forum that that, and i assume the process would be the same.

I tried downloading Garmin express last night and tried web updater through basecamp, but both seem to only look for the latest and install it. I found and downloaded the previous firmware (7.50), but cannot seem to get it loaded.

Can anyone help?

Rename firmware to GUPDATE.GCD and place it on internal storage in Garmin folder. After reboot, GPSr will ask, if you want to perform a downgrade. This will also perform a complete reset of all settings.

Thanks for the quick reply. Are you referring to renaming the older firmware file that i downloaded?

Also, when you say, a complete reset of all settings, what does that mean? When i upgrade firmware, all my map, track and other settings stay as is. Is this like a hard reset or something where is wipes everything?

Yes, I mean the older firmware, you downloaded. Basically the older firmware, you want to downgrade to. And complete reset means like hard reset.

Why does it do a complete reset going backwards and not forwards?

You will have to ask Garmin, why this is the case. It's build in and forced by downgrading.

Having never had to do a hard reset before, does that mean all favorites, waypoints and routes will also be gone? As in literally deleted from the unit? Just want to understand exactly what i'm getting into.

Yes, all user data is gone.

In many cases, newer firmware features involve changes to internal data structures. Older firmware cannot use the older data structures. I don't know if the problem exists with ALL version downgrades, but I can see why Garmin would include a reset as part of the process.

Ok, thanks for the help. I will give it a shot.....trying to backup data and settings first but for some reason it is a snail's pace copying off the unit.

It appears that they aren't supporting the unit anymore given the date of the latest firmware, and since that is acting up, I don't really have much choice i guess.
