Manage Maps in Garmin Express

Curious what the consensus is here.  I have a Montana 700i with a 32 Gb SD card installed.  I wanted to move City Navigator maps to the SD card (using Garmin Express_Manage Maps) to make more room in internal storage.

I did move the maps and everything seemed fine; however, Garmin Express crashed every time I tried to use the Removable Storage tab under the Manage Maps option.

I posted in the Garmin Apps & Software forum and opened a Support ticket.  Both avenues resulted in me being told that I should not be moving anything unless Express told me explicitly that there was not enough room in internal storage.

I see references here to maps being moved so it seems my idea was not an unusual one.  I think the Montana accepted the move okay and that CN maps still worked.  There is some overhead though because when an update comes Garmin Express plunks it down in internal storage even if CN is installed in removable storage.

  • I had a similar problem and needed to free up loads of space in Windows which then resolved all of my problems updating and moving the location of maps. I have TOPO and Birdseye on an SD card an CT on the internal storage..

  • I have an enormous amount of space on my Windows PC drives.

It seems that the only piece that is unhappy with my using Manage Maps to move a map to an SD card is Garmin Express.  Given that impression I have moved TopoActive to the SD card and left CT on internal storage.  Part of my choice was that I thought CT would be updated more often that TopoActive.

My Montana 700i is happy with this arrangement and displays/uses the maps without any issues that I am aware of.

Even though Garmin Express crashes if I try to open Removable Storage I don't care because I can always reinstall TopoActive and get it back to internal storage.

  • Hello Installing Software Updates and Managing Maps with the Montana 700 Series This article will walk you through the options you have for managing the maps with your 700i. You can remove the maps and move them to removable storage which can then be added back at any time. However, you cannot move the preloaded maps to an SD card.

  • Thank you Garmin-Leslie. I appreciate the direct reference to how the Montana uses internal storage.

    • Preloaded maps cannot be placed on a microSD card as a way to free up space on the device. Data stored on the device (waypoints, routes, tracks and activities) is kept in a separate reserved part of the device memory so it does not impact the free space. If you wish to free up space on your device and do not need some of your preloaded maps, you can remove them.

At the moment I’ve broken those rules by moving TopoActive maps.  It’s easy enough to remedy this by reinstalling the TopoActive maps.

Seems Express could be enhanced to prevent moving preinstalled maps while allowing them to be removed and reinstalled.
