Can anyone tell me if any of the map programs show old or active mining sites?

I just got the 750i and would like to use it in the desert southwest for exploring. I have the SW Topo pack but I don’t see any symbology for mines.

Anyone have any knowledge about this?

Your best bet in the US is to access the historical USGS topo collection. I personally use the GeoPDF format. I haven't done it in a while, but you can convert selected areas into Garmin "custom" maps…

I believe that ExpertGPS uses public-domain topo and aerial imagery. Both are sourced from USGS. I don't see any easy way to determine the dates. I do believe that the topos are based on the 7.5 minute series (1:24000). But age is an issue.

For current data, or the best selection of historical data, use the GeoPDFs from USGS as described earlier in this thread.
