Just bought a unit and plan to take it to Colorado for hiking. Marketing images show much more detailed maps than what I see on this unit. Do I need to buy extra maps?

Hi,
I'm in the UK but I imagine the situation is similar. The device comes with some maps, depending on what package you buy. In the UK, Ordnance Survey (OS) maps are used most commonly and unless they came with the device, need to be purchased separately. I believe all devices would come with a European Topographic map as standard which is OK but the OS maps are what we're used to.
If you browse the Garmin maps store, you should be able to see what maps are available for Colorado. Similarly, looking at the map layers available on your device will tell you what you already have.
So in short, the answer is you may need to purchase separately the maps seen in marketing material.
Chris.
Thank you, Chris!
Yes. Garmin sells more detailed topos (roughly equivalent to 1:24000). In the US, these are divided by region. To cover the entire US, you would need to buy several of them.
You can order them on SD cards or for download. If you go with SD card, you can move the maps from one unit to another. But they are never updated. If you download, the maps will be locked to the unit on which they are first installed. But they are updated from time to time.
Super helpful. thank you!
maybe that can be an alternative.
Yes, OSM maps will work on the 7x0i. I don't have any experience with the quality of the topo data (as opposed to streets/alleys/trails).
I don't know how good OSM maps are in USA. I am German and they are very good in Europe. There are also small paths. Try it. They don't cost anything.
Be aware, the Montana 7x0i units have issues identifying OSM and CityNavigator maps separately, which can lead to many different routing and other map page issues....
I am not aware of that. I have got a 700 and no poblems.
700 is not 7x0i and does not include CityNavigator maps, therefore is not affected.
