Montana 700i won't turn on

My new 700i which I've used on one outing was working fine, then got home it sat for a few weeks, then I plugged the usb cable to charge it, came back and it just acts like the battery is dead and won't turn on.

Can this GPS be turned on without a battery installed?

I can not get this thing to do anything, took the SD card out, swapped usb cables, different usb outlets, nothing works.

Any suggestions? Get a new battery?

Thanks!

  • If the battery ran completely flat, it may take a while (perhaps a few hours) of being plugged in for it even have enough power to show "charging" on the screen. If possible, try charging with a wall wart (the dumber the better) rather than the PC. This eliminates variables such as "USB port turned off when the PC went to sleep.

I am assuming that it is NOT in extended tracking mode. In this mode, it looks dead except for an occasional LED flash. Still, pressing Power should wake it up.

If it does not show signs of life after a couple of hours on the wall wart, open a support ticket.

Edited to add: You can also try a full reset, which is sometimes useful if/when the unit gets into an unresponsive state.

Note that this is a big hammer. It discards all user data on the unit. You will be required to redo the outdoor portion of device activation as well.

  • It doesn't respond at all, so I cant do a reset and I've had it on the charger for over 24 hours too.

Will it power on with out a battery installed? Could someone test this please. Thanks!

  • Yes, it will power up without a battery, at least on a wall wart. However, the device warns you that iR features do not work without a battery.

I'm not sure why it matters. If the device will not charge, you need to open a support ticket. If, in addition, the device will not power up without the battery, you still need to open a support ticket...

  • I opened a support ticket and they are sending a replacement as it should power on like you said with out a battery. It doesn't do anything so hopefully the next unit lasts. A few of my buddies have experienced flakey things with these 700i, my 478 is still kicking strong after 10 yrs.. don't make them like they use too.
