Montana 700 Map Nightmare

My M700i shipped with DEM base Map, TopoActive Europe and CN Europe. I did a software update to 8.4 and also did a map update on both. Since then DEM base map has disappeared and I can't get Topo Active and CN Europe to load to the unit as it appears they are too large. I reduced the coverage area and still does not work. It strikes me that a 16GB drive on the unit is simply to small.

I brought the unit with also TOPO GB 1:50 on a card which is only 8GB.

Spoke to Garmin who say install the TopoActive on a SD card even though their website says you cant do this! Every time I try to load it to the card it fails.

Any ideas?

Hey thanks -that’s really helpful-I will put the topo maps on sd card and see if will read the cycle maps on another sd card-wish me luck!…

Garmin is one big, expensive ***.....during twenty years with these devices all the time more or less this kind of *** mess...

I have similar issues. Montana 700 unit will not read the Garmin EU cycling maps either on pre-installed garmin sd card or download. Garmin have no idea why . I am now sending the device back for a refund and sticking with my trusty garmin Oregon -which will read anything !

You can also try downloading the open fiets map from https://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/europe, get an SD card of at least 32 GB, create a folder named Garmin on the SD card, unzip the Downloaded file into the previously created folder. It worked fine for me!

Ok thanks will try that-i should have thought of that ! It should work as i have other custom maps. It just doesn’t seem to like anything put together by garmin!

Has the SD card been popped into another GPS? Usually the (Garmin) GPS writes a signature on the SD card so int cant't be interchanged with another device.

Hi thanks- no it was a brand new card never used on any other device formatted fat 32 and I went through this with garmin . the unlocking unl codes were all correct also and are specific for this device. Real head scratcher. Anyway I am probably going to keep the unit and use the maps I am going to download from openfietsmap . Hilarious that the garmin maps (which are licensed from openstreetmaps) do not work on the device.

This is a known problem - the current Topo Active 2022.20 and the Garmin Cycle Map 2022.11 are mutually exclusive. I have the same problem with my M700i - either the topo or the cycle map can be installed.

My guess is that Garmin made a mistake with the map ID in the cycle map.

I have already tested - no matter where the maps are stored - internally or SD, as well as the current TOPO and the Cycle Map 2022.11 are together on the device, one of the two maps is not available. It seems to take precedence on the map that was installed first.

I wonder if no one at Garmin tests before this or other crap is distributed to customers.

It's annoying that I bought the Cycle Map 2021.20 as a download, but now I can only download 2022.11 after reinstalling it.
