Another moving Topo map to SD card issue.

Looks like I just wasted US$ 160 down the drain. Bought a Norwegian 20K Topo map as a SD card. Today I put the card into the SD slot and would like to save the map to the Montana 700i using Bascamp/Express. Due to Garmin Copy protection it is not possible to move/copy the SD card content.

Only way to save the the 20K Topo map to the unit, or a 32GB card, is to buy the download version, not by buying the SD card version. Should be a warning telling you that the SD card version is not possible to move/copy to the unit.

This is the way Garmin licensing works. If you buy it on SD card, it is locked to the card, not to the unit. So you can move the card itself from unit to unit. If you download it (or buy it on CD/DVD if they still offer that option), it is locked to the unit on which you first install it.

I learned my lesson.

I am pretty sure that there will be no more new Garmin units in my powersport toys, I will stay with the old 276c units with old Topo maps, mountains, lakes, and rivers have not moved.

I hear ya. I'm still using Topo 2008 non locked to load into my gps units that don't come with topo in them. Still has most of the important features. you might be able to buy one on ebay etc. since it can load to any computer or gps

I am also using topo maps from 2008 in my old 276c units. Got this Montana 700i with a new Topo map, but the Montana screen is not good in bright sunshine and snow. Plan was to replace the old 276c units with 276Cx and up to date 20K topo maps. To make it short, new plan, money saved. The Montana 700i will be used with an ATV only.

What happens if I buy the download version and install to the external SD card using basecamp? Is it lock to my 750i or lock to the specific card I use?

Locked to the unit in which the card is first inserted.
