SOLVED: Montana 700i - After a reset, I can't pair with phone

I was trying to reset my trip data and somehow it reset my phone and removed everything.  After the reset, it tried to make me sign up again for inReach. I assume my subscriptions still work since the IMEI number and auth. code didn't change. So I skipped that part.  It should work correct?

The GPS 700i seems to work but now I have to restore everything.  

The first thing I did was try to reconnect with my Connect and Explore apps.  Can't pair with phone or use explore or Connect apps on phone

* I turned on Bluetooth on my phone and selected Phone Setup on GPS

* Looked for the Montana device (found it)

* Selected the one that said Montana 700i #xxxxxxxx

* it appeared to pair and went into the paired devices list.  But my GPS is still saying "Connecting" for status

* When I open explore app, it's not connected. So I select pair but it returns with "connection timed out"

The apps don't seem to be working now that I reset the 700i

Need help

  • The Montana requires TWO BT connections. I assume there's a programmer somewhere in Garmin-land who knows why. The rest of just live with the mess it makes. 

    The conventional wisdom when you have pairing problems is to start from dust. Using the phone's settings app, "forget" ALL of the BT connections for the device. Using the device, "forget" the phone.

    To reestablish pairing, start with Garmin Connect Mobile on the phone. Yeah, I know.  Pair that way. DO NOT use the phone's settings app for this. Once you are paired with GCM, then start the Explore app and pair. This will use the GCM pairing previously established.

    You can start with the Explore app instead of GCM. But it's just going to punt you over to GCM. So it's the same process, just much more confusing.

    Note: I have not done this in quite a while. It's possible that Explore is better at this than it used to be. Or not.

  • Problem solved.

    I removed my phone from the Connect App on the phone. Then reconnected to the device.  Once the Connect App reconnected, everything else worked.  My Explore App now paired successfully and I was able to sync and recovered everything that was on 700i before the reset.
