Rugged mount power supply

Ive just installed my 700i with a rugged mount, and I initially was powering it from my Neutrino Elements Plus power distribution module, which is activated by the ignition. The 700 starts fine, then goes dull after a minute or so and when I key off, there is no prompt to say external power has been lost. This leads me to believe that as the screen goes dull, it has switched to battery power. Is this correct ?

Ive since hooked it directly to the battery, and it works fine now, dosnt go dull, however as it is connected to the battery, its permanently on and I have to turn it off manually or take it out of the cradle.

My neutrino is supplying battery voltage fused at 3 amps, so Im curious as to why it wont work supplied from the module ? Am I missing something fundamantal here ? Has anyone had similar experiences ?

  • Did you turn the 700 on manually or did it come on automatically when you keyed the vehicle on? If power is supplied, the battery symbol should have a lightning bolt through it.

Home menu- Setup- System- Advanced Setup- External Power Off- should be set to “prompted.” That will tell you when power is lost and whether you want to stay on or turn off.

External Power On- should be “turn on.” The 700 will then come on automatically when power is supplied.

If those things don’t work, I’d suggest the power distribution thingy needs to be looked at. Complex, Bluetooth settings, etc. I’m sure there’s something in there that could be the culprit.

  • It comes on automatically after I keying on no problems, but then dulls off and then no prompt after keying off. 700 stays on. Ive never seen the battery charging symbol weather connect to the PDM or direct to the battery.

  • It almost sounds as though your Neutrino circuit is set to “momentary.” It does a quick closed circuit blip when you turn on the key, then it shuts back off. It should be set to “on.” There appears to be several options for what the circuits do.

Whether plugged in the mount or USB, in the upper right it gives %, the battery symbol is green and there is a little lightning bolt in the battery symbol. It should be there whenever it is getting external power.

  • Yeah thanks for the answers, Ill go back into it all and have a look. The Neutrino is new as well, so Im not a boffin at driving it just yet, so they are great suggestions to look at. thanks

  • I finally got of the bottom of what was going on and so just a bit of follow up....The circuits on my PDM were set to 'variable' rather than 'switched' which meant I was getting a much lower voltage and not enough to run the 700i.  Once I figured out how to change that I was underway. Thanks all your suggestions and help, much appreciated.

  • Good to hear it was an easy fix.
