Fenix 8 text responses

Ive just got inreach mini 2 and dont have a subscription yet.  Ive set it up and its connected to the watch.

There are 3 types of preprepared text responses.

1-As I understand it the quick text messaging from the messenger app seems to be solely for the another contact with the messenger app, is that right? but when I put a contact it says 'this recipient is no longer on garmin messenger' so does that mean this option for quick messages only comes up when messaging others who have the messenger app?

2- The inreach is synced with my fenix 8 and I have changed the text responses in the connect app.  Despite syncing and switching on/off, going into app settings the preset text responses havent updated on the watch to reflect those changes.  Is that something it only does if you have an active subscription?

3- Explore app has seperate message presets which can be seen on the inreach 2, but I cannot see a way to edit this on the phone in the explore app to sync with the inreach and would like to avoid typing it manually on the inreach.

Finally the inreach messages have seperate presets when mapshare is clicked on the device.  Where are the in any app and how do I edit them.

Any help with the above would be welcome and clarification on this as 3 seperate presets message routes through 3 seperare apps is v confusing.

Thanks

  • Just to clarify, there are presets message you can answer with in the connect app and I was confused by that but it seems thats for normal messages and nothing to do with inreach.

    Ah yes,…

  • 1) The quick text messages are an inReach feature, not specific to the Messenger app. You can edit those messages via the Messenger app or via the Explore website. They are just shortcuts for quickly selecting a message, it doesn't matter to whom or how (email, SMS, inReach message) you send it.
The messages count towards your inReach plan. But if you have your Mini 2 paired with the Messenger app, and you have internet connectivity (WiFI or cellular), the message is sent via internet and doesn't count towards your plan.

    2) not sure if and how the messages sync with the Fenix 8. It could indeed be that you need an active subscription.

    3) not sure what you exactly mean with this? Do you mean check-in messages? These are three messages that are predefined by Garmin  and cannot be changed by the user. Sending them doesn't count towards your plan.
But, if you have created your Garmin account before September 2022, you may still have preset messages, those where three messages that you could configure on Explore web. They have been replaced by the check-in messages. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=y6jQ78qAaW6EvPvztACfj8 for the differences.

    4) when sending your MapShare link from the device, you can add a message. You can type your message or select from one of your quick text messages. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=sBq5c6WJxF3UwhdoRzf9Z7 for more details.

So in summary, three kinds of messages

    • check-in, determined by Garmin, not changeable, do not count towards your plan
    • preset, only available on older Garmin accounts, three messages that can be configured by the user, do not count towards your plan
    • quick text messages, configurable by user, sending them count towards your plan (unless message is sent via the Messenger app and internet connectivity is available)
  • Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to explain this.  The links are great.

I have edited the quick texts in the garmin messenger app for my needs but on syncing they dont appear in the inreach or messenger widgit on the fenix 8.  Im not sure why that is.

Re point 3 the explore app has 3 presets which can be sent from the explore app only.  I get what youre saying re older accounts and the link but its defintely there in the app are you saying theyre a legacy of older models that persists but isnt available to newer ones? They appear to be configurable but there is a banner above them saying device not activated, so maybe i just cant see them and theyre not because the service isnt activated but they are not called check in messages but there are 3 of them. Likewise I see no option for check in messages at all on any app, I can only see it on the inreach 2 but looking at screen shots on the web this may appear once the service is active. Likewise in the web login for explore there is not option to edit anything.

My only issue is the edited quick texts wont update in the in reach widgit, nor does the remote activation of tracking, which worked initially and lots of commentary on here and reditt about it, nor the sos feature (ie you push the buttons but nothing triggers on the device though it does on the watch, despite being connected) but ive just contacted garmin and they say i need an active account for the remote to work.  Im always wary of that kind of excuse esp tracking which doesnt need an account but Ill update once I know more.

Ah yes, I think that's the case indeed, for replying to regular text messages.

You indeed need to have an active inReach subscription to be able to use the inReach features like tracking and SOS. Without an active subscription you cannot use any inReach feature.
