Am I understanding correctly that the Mini 2 can only text or email to another Inreach? Even with a phone and the app?

I am ready to pull the plug and buy a Mini 2 now that they are on sale. But as I research further, It may not suit my needs. I want to be able to send a message while hiking OR if cell towers go down and satellites are up. Is it true that the recipient must have an Inreach? What if they have a Spot?

The Messenger app on both sides is easiest but you can also only have SMS/email/inReach on the "other side". I don't think you can message someone with a Spot, unless there's an entry point into that ecosystem that presents as SMS/email.

The recipient does not necessarily need to have an inReach device. You can send messages from an inReach device to SMS, email or to recipients that have the Garmin Messenger app. But the recipient needs to have cellular or internet in order to read these messages. Communication between inReach to Spot is not possible as far as I know.

If the recipient does not have cellular or Wi-Fi and you want the communicate, the recipient would also need to have an inReach device.
