Fenix 7X Pro + inReach Mini 2 - Sending custom message to MapShare from watch via inReach widget

Hello community, hello Garmin support,

TL;DR:

When composing a custom message on my Fenix 7X Pro via the inReach widget or data page for sending it via my inReach Mini 2, I can't select "Mapshare" from the contacs list since there is no such entry while it is available in Garmin messenger and on the Mini 2 itself.

---------------------------------------------

I would have a question regarding remote controlling an inReach Mini 2 via my Fenix 7X Pro.

With the inReach Mini 2 you can send two types of messages. The three predefined ones for checkin and custom ones including predefined templates for the latter.

For the three predefined checkin messages, you setup the recipients in Garmin Explore. So here I've setup the cellphone number of my wife and also MapShare. This ensures that all checkin messages I send also appear in MapShare on the map which is great, since you can see the messages at the location where they have been sent.

So now I want to do the very same with custom messages and here comes my problem.

When I want to compose a custom message (or use one of the predefined templates) this time I have to chose from my contacts to whom I send this message. When I do this with the Messenger app on my phone which is connected with the inReach Mini 2, or directly on the Mini 2, there is an entry "Mapshare" in my contacts list. So also for these messages I can easily send them to one or more contacts AND make them appear on Mapshare.

BUT my normal usecase is, to remote control the Mini 2 which resides in my backpack via my Fenix 7X Pro and while I see all the contacts here that I maintained for my Mini 2, I do NOT see an entry "Mapshare".

My question is, if I'm missing something in the setup process, or if I can manually add a contact which achieves this and how it has to look like, or if this is a missing feature or a bug in the Fenix firmware. I'm running the good old 17.28 FW on my Fenix since it's stable.

Any ideas?

Best regards,

Thomas

  • I'm considering purchase of in reach mini 2 too. And the case raised by Thomas would apply to how I would use it too.

Please fix it so I can buy it.

    Thank you

  • I'm currently unsure if anyone monitors this forum. Also in the Fenix 7 forum I posted this question and I also contacted directly via message, but neither from her nor from I get any reaction, not event that they forward this to the responsible engineering team.

I'm not sure how to bring this a step forward.

  • Only FYI, some fixes regard InReach in the latest

    23.28 beta

    • Fixed an issue where InReach (IR) messages would sometimes not be delivered when sending to multiple contacts.

    23.22 beta

    • Fix an issue where the device could not cancel an InReach (IR) SOS message.
    • Fix an issue where InReach (IR) SOS messages would sometimes be divided amongst several threads.
  • Thanks for the info, but this is not about the issue I reported.

  • I'm surprised by all the InReach fixes pushed to F7, when Beta Bug Reports are not dealing with this feature. So i expect a positivie side effect for this thread ... :-(

  • In principle you're right, perhaps I triggered something with my question?

The current problem with Garmin is, even if these bug fixes make it to the next release version, I would not immediately install it since I'm one of these guys who stays on 17.28 since quite a long time now since every new "stable" firmware introduces a lot of new issues and doesn't fix some others that already exist for a long time.

I need a working device and currently my watch simply works for everything I do without any issues. I would highly appreciate if I could back to trusting Garmins software releases but currently I would not install a new firmware just for seeing, if some small issue got solved coincidentally.

Anyways thanks for the info, it would be great to get some response from one of the Garmin support people here in this thread but currently there's just utter silence.
