How do I configure an inReach Mini 2 for my dad who does not use a smartphone?

We bought this for my dad so he would have the SOS function at his farm. He doesn't text, but I think he can use the check-in feature.

Should I activate with my Garmin account and give him the device, or should create a Garmin account for him?

  • If you plan to also use an Inreach one day, create a second account.
I would create an account, set up the device, book a plan, set up the check-in on explore, sync the device once and then hand it to him.

Show him how to charge it, how to test it every morning, how to use sos. If he is savvy with testing and sos, show him how to use the pre-defined check-in messages.

This is how i would do it to the not so tech savvy family members. In general the user interface is quite easy to understand. In my eyes, finding the buttons under their covers is more of a problem. Especially that you have to open the lid on the SOS Button before you can initiate one.

  • Thank you!  I think I'm going to set up a second account for him. I am going to see him next week. I can't wait to give it to him. He's going to love it.

  • in such case, you should also arrange for a real sos test, so the user knows how to send sos and what is going to happen and how to terminate it.

You can book time for the test at garmin.
