Now possible to suspend inReach subscription

With the introduction of the new inReach plans in September 2024, Garmin removed the ability to suspend a subscription.

It seems Garmin has come to conclusion that that was something customer didn't like, so they have changed their stance. It is now possible to suspend your inReach subscription again if you are in one of the new consumer plans (Enabled, Essential, Standard or Premium). You apparently can keep your subscription suspend for 12 months (consecutively), after which your subscription will be cancelled.

When you suspend, the change takes place at the end of your current billing cycle, so not instantaneous.

And of course you cannot use any inReach features with a suspended subscription, but that makes sense.

  • Hmm, I wonder if they'll allow Suspended -> Enabled -> Suspended or require you to go to a higher plan level from Suspended.

It seems odd/spiteful if they don't offer an option to make it automatically continue instead of cancelling, e.g. have it go to another plan level for one month and then drop back to suspended. Just automate what they are allowing customers to do manually, instead of being jerks about it. Or restore an option to charge an annual fee and remain suspended.

  • You can switch to any plan level from suspend, so Suspended -> Enabled is possible.

Not sure what you mean with “automatically continue”? It’s not that big of a deal to switch to Suspended or back to a different plan imo.

  • Where do you find the new policy documented?

I mean automatically in the sense that a suspended user would probably like to continue service at the lowest cost available, not get cancelled.

For example I am still on my grandtathered suspension and the last communication was that it would automatically change to Enabled in early July 2025 on my annual service anniversary. Now I hope they don't fumble this into some account status purgatory...

And why would your migration from Freedom to the new plan get fumbled? If you are on Freedom Suspended you get migrated to Enabled. And you stay on Enabled until you change to a different plan or suspend the service.

If your plan is reaching 12 months of being suspended, you will get two emails to notify that Garmin will cancel your subscription unless you switch to one of the available levels. Seems pretty fair to me.
