Inreach gets outplayed

It was bound to happen eventually, inreach is a fantastic piece of kit but it needs to up its game, hopefully this ends roaming too

  • I seriously doubt that Garmin will up the game on this device, they can’t or won’t fix issues on some of their existing units, plus I’ve never heard of any suggestions on this forum ever being implemented. You might as well talk to your dog or cat about it.

  • Use case for general Internet access is massive, in addition to emergencies, all data roaming, for ais when sailing, Internet access livaboard diving, anywhere poor access, unless they do this it'll be irrelevant and those mediocre plans unjustifiable, fair dibs to apple for blowing this into the mainstream

  • Apple gets **** done, not Garmin.

  • as long as Starling network is only available to small part of the world, and if it works or not is depending on one personal preference, this system can not be considered for any safety applications.

Any safety related communication need to employ reliable and independent organization behind it.

  • You're right,I'm not suggesting that should be stopped, can't they do both? So there's a choice,

garmin have addressed better comms with messenger, but it needs matched apps, there's a big space for less than urgent but important comms in areas with poor reception and a fuller device with more options would bridge those needs, only issue is then cost of connection

At v least new messenger type functions should come to the next inreach

  • there are other ways, not only InReach.

you can use Iridiums other services as well, they all can do standard communication as well. Iridiums phones can do even PTT like a portable radio, you can have Internet with IridiumGo and what ever exists. All of them work truly worldwide.

  • You're right, i should have clarified, I'm talking in garmin ecosystem, inreach is useful for me for diving as well as other stuff, would be nice to have more functionality without buying more kit, the new starlink service probably solves that anyway re mobiles, but would require another subscription i guess, can't have everything, but I'm saying garmin should be all over this because that's where it's headed
