Delorme inReach 1.5 won't start properly

Hello,

I hope this is an appropriate group for asking about this old Delorme inReach 1.5. If not, please direct me to the right place.

The device has the following symptoms:

- after startup, Power LED flashes once every 3 seconds, message LED cycles continuously through one, two and three flashes.

- can't be powered off by long pressing the power button, batteries have to be removed to power off.

- isn't accessible vis USB nor via Bluetooth

- on one occasion I was able to access it via USB in firmware upgrade mode, and I was able to re-flash firmware 1.5 with the tool and file provided by Garmin

Any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Helmut, Bremen, Germany

  • No experience here with Delorme, but have you already tried different batteries? Isn’t the 3 times flashing a hint for that? Have you looked if you have told the Delorme the correct used battery type?

  • Just tried another pair of alkalines - same behaviour. Powered from USB, the same.

Anyway, I could have been more precise: all LED flashes are green. On the Delorme inReach 1.5 the low battery signal is a red flashing power LED.

  •  To be sure: you are sure you haven’t accidentally triggered an SOS?Three time flashing green might be a sign for that and if an SOS is triggered, you can’t power off the device…

  • Yes, I'm quite sure. With an active SOS, the dedicated SOS LED should flash green once every 3 seconds, and with an acknowledged alarm green once every 1.5 seconds.

  • Update:

I just disassembled the unit, it wasn't very difficult, no seals, no glue. I separated the two pcb's and put everything together again. Now it works as it should, can be switched on and off via keyboard and be paired to my iPhone. Possibly there was a bad contact in the keyboard ribbon cable connector or in one of the pins joining the pcbs.

The Earthmate app now tells me that the unit is connected to another account. As this is my first contact with the inReach world, I still have to find out how this can be changed.
