InReach Mini 2, Tracking with Send Interval "Off"

Hello, with InReach Mini 2, if I set Send Interval to "Off" and then start Tracking, it just logs the track points to the device without sending them anywhere.  That makes sense, and is what I want.

HOWEVER, I can't get that to work via the Explore / Messenger apps.  When I'm controlling the Mini using either of those apps, I can set the Send Interval to "Off", but then the app refuses to initiate Tracking.  With the Messenger app, I click Track and nothing happens.  With the Explore app, I start navigating, then chose to start tracking, and Explore then tells me it will first change the Send Interval from "Off" to "X minutes", and my only alternative is to cancel.

Any thoughts, or different experiences with this?  Seems like a basic mismatch between what you get via the app interface vs the Mini interface.

  • Tracking means sending track points at regular intervals.

If you set tracking to zero, it will do what you tell it, zero tracking, meaning no tracking points at all.

In fact to store internal data is often referred to as logging

  • I think the missmatch is because Garmin labels both thinks as tracking.
For the Apps, tracking is sending your position via Satellite with an set Intervall.
For the Inreach, tracking is recording your positional data (a „track“).

A better wording would prevent that confusion. Also, it would be nice to start recording via the Explore app, but I don’t think it was meant to do that.

  • We're sorry for the confusion.

The inReach Mini 2 allows you to do two similar but separate functions. One is recording an activity; the other is sending track points to be viewed on a MapShare page. For simplicity, both functions can be controlled by selecting the "Start Tracking" and "Stop Tracking" menu items directly on the device. As you have stated, setting the Send Interval to Off allows you to start recording an activity without sending tracking points when you select Start Tracking.

The Start Tracking feature in the Garmin Explore and Garmin Messenger apps, however, refers specifically to inReach tracking. While it is possible to start tracking (sending track points) from the apps, it is not possible to start an activity from the apps without also starting tracking.

  • thank you for the detailed explanation of the tracking feature - I was particularly interested in how to save/log my hikes without sending data as I have found that the inReach Mini 2 battery capacity heavily impacted by non clear sky conditions - this brings up another point, it would be great if there was an option to stop Message & weather checking intervals due to the same reason mentioned - battery life heavily impacted by non clear sky - thank you for a great product, happy owner :)

  • thank you for your post, this helped me understand what was confusing me, I wanted to reduce the battery drain that comes with sending data when it's not needed

  • Because the device is a safety device, it is not possible to disable the hourly mail check. The device does not check for weather information except when prompted to do so. Typically, even if you are in wooded areas, the device is able to get a fix on the Iridium satellite within a few minutes as long as it is not otherwise obstructed, e.g., by being inside a backpack, tent, etc. The satellite is typically not directly overhead but east or west of you, so clear access to the sky in those directions is most important.
