Messages sent to a cell phone also go to that user’s inReach. Way to avoid?

I use my inReach to message a friend on her android cell phone when I hike by myself and she’s back at home. She also has an inReach device listed in the contact I use for her. When I send her messages from my inReach to her cell phone, the messages often also go to her inReach. Is there a way to avoid this? Should I make two separate contacts for her in my address book?

  • While you cannot use the Earthmate app with the inReach Mini 2, you can use the Garmin Explore app, which will still provide messaging capability but will not involve your phone number in message routing. If you choose to discontinue use of the Garmin Messenger app, please be sure to delete your Garmin Messenger account before uninstalling the app. Deleting the Garmin Messenger Account and App

I am assuming that you have an inReach Mini 2, as this is the inReach Mini 2 forum. If you have an inReach Messenger as your posts suggest may be possible, unfortunately, Garmin Messenger is the only compatible app.

  • You did not specify what device you have, and since we're in the inReach Mini 2 forum, I assumed you had an inReach Mini 2.

But since you have an inReach Messenger you need to use the Messenger app, that's just the way the device is meant to work.

If you're not happy with that you're better of with an inReach Mini 2, since that can be used without the Messenger app, but with the Explore app (Earthmate is for older inReach devices).

  • That's an understandable assumption. I did not see that I had posted in the Mini 2 forum. Thank you for your replies!

I'm pretty done with Garmin at this point. I need something straightforward and intuitive to use. My original Mini was ok, though it did have some complications, but between the different apps you have to use for different purposes, it's getting pretty ridiculous. Oh, and the fact that my Messenger paired just fine when I tested it but would only sporadically pair while I was out in the woods with no cell service in the middle of nowhere when I needed it most. Pretty big confidence hit for me.

I will make sure to delete my Garmin Messenger account.
