No longer able to sent myself text messages for check in messages. Icon isn't a phone by my number anymore - it's a message icon.

What the title says - up until very recently, when I sent one of my pre-set check ins (just switched them over to the newer check in messages) and while I can finally get it to go to my email address, I can't send a check in to my cell as a text message. I noticed that the icon next to my phone number is a message icon instead of a phone icon - so did something change to prevent sending of a message to SMS when it's the account holder's number? It's still successfully texting my other contacts for those presets.

  • Are you using the messenger app? The messenger app is hijacking your phone number and you can’t send messages to your phone number anymore.

  • Yes! We can still send one off messages to my cell number and they go through - its the check in/presets that are not sending through to my cell number associated with the account (my husband is going out without me this weekend, so we are getting him set up to be able to message me rather than the other way around).

  • First, be sure that the number on the check-in message is correct, including the country code (+! for North America).

And be aware that ALL check-in messages have the SAME distribution list. It looks like you can change them independently, but changing one changes ALL of them. Another example of fine UI design /rant

If all of that is good, open a support ticket. I seem to recall at least one other forum post like this, but I can't find it.

  • Did anyone figure this one out?

I just got a Mini 2 and want both my wife and me to be able to check-in with it, sending a message to the other. I've added myself as a Contact, I see myself as a recipient in the device, but I do not get a text message - only my wife does. The account is under my phone number.

I've tried deleting the Messenger and Explore apps from my phone to see if the SMS gets picked up by my phone txt message app, but no luck.

I really want this to be something either one of us can take out and use to message the other (including check-ins), but I don't see how to make that work. Any help is appreciated.

  • What about a non check in message to yourself, can you send yourself a quick text message? When you go into the explore website and check your check in messages, the three free ones, do you see two phone numbers listed and see two names listed on your device with phone numbers when you select a check in message? If not check both the explore website and the explore app to make sure both have both of your phones listed. Don’t forget to sync your device. I’ve found syncing when signed into the messager app, my data doesn’t transfer to my device. Also there is nothing wrong with pre set messages, when you convert them to check in you can no longer change them to say what you want.

  • Thanks for the response.

After a bit more testing, I think I've narrowed the issue down:

I appears that I am able to receive SMS to my phone when my contact is the ONLY check-in recipient. If my wife or even MapShare is in the recipient list, they get the message, but i do not.

So it appears that the device is able to Check-in with me as the Account owner via SMS, but fails to do so if more than one recipient is listed. Multiple recipients works only if I am not one of the listed recipients.

This is closer to working, but still problematic. I would not expect the Check-in to be limited to a single recipient to function correctly if the recipient is the account owner.

  • Well I have pre set messages and just set it up to message me and my wife on the check in messages and we both received it on our phones and also on my 67i. I’ll try my mini 2 when I get a chance. I am the account holder too.

  • I emailed Support about it. The solutions was to delete my Garmin Messenger account in the Messenger app and then delete the Messenger app (I had only deleted it removed the app before, not deleted the account). That means I cannot use the Messenger app, but at least my wife can use the device and I can receive text messages from it using Check-ins.

  • As far as I know I only have one Garmin account, previously a Delorme account. Not an account for each app.  I think you are just signed into your account via the messenger or explore apps. Can’t you just send a check in message to yourself or your wife directly from your mini 2? It’s very easy. The messenger app does seem to have issues, some people complain about its inability to bill correctly and sense cell vs no cell reception. It also prevents syncing if I’m signed into it. You can message thru the explore app too, but no check in or quick text messages just a plain message. But you can do everything off your device.

  • The Check-in message's recipient list is set using the Messenger app or the explore.garmin.com website. You can't choose the recipient for Check-ins directly in the Inreach device. I want to use check-in messages because they are unlimited, while the other messages are not unlimited on the plan that I have (and I'd prefer to not pay for the upgraded plan as the check-in messages are sufficient for our purposes at the moment).

After some testing, I didn't see much benefit to the Messenger app and so deleted it and the my Messenger account. So now my wife and I can use the device to send check-in messages which will appear as SMS on both or our phones.
